Pools Youth Team return to league action on Saturday as they make the trip to face Mansfield Town (12noon kick-off).

Having suffered a surprise defeat at Oldham Athletic last time out in the cup, Ian McGuckin’s youngsters will be hoping to bounce back when they come up against The Stags.

Pools are fifth in the Youth Alliance League table, lying one point and one place behind their weekend hosts so a victory on the road would push them back in contention at the top.

“We didn’t perform to our standards at Oldham but we have to move on quickly and the lads are determined to put that behind them.

“Mansfield are a good side but we have the incentive of being able to leapfrog them in the table if we get the win so we will go there and try to be positive.

“The players have done well so far this season – I’ve said before we’re a very young bunch this year so we’ll have our ups and downs but overall they’ve been great and we want to continue that.”

Saturday’s game takes place at The RH Academy on Woburn Lane in Mansfield with entry free of charge for all supporters.

Fox Hits Double In Youth Team Win

15 October 2018

Brad Fox scored twice as Pools Youth Team came out on top during a thrilling encounter at Mansfield Town on Saturday.

The forward netted in spectacular fashion with just eight minutes remaining to finally settle a hard-fought affair which swung one way then the other.

Pools fell one down in the game but hit back when Luca Murphy’s long-range drive cannoned back off the bar and Josh Scott was there to score from the rebound.

Ian McGuckin’s youngsters then went in front in the second half thanks to a lovely move which saw Scott cleverly flick the ball through for Fox who applied a neat finish to make it 2-1.

However, Mansfield took advantage of some hesitant defending from Pools to claim an equaliser and it looked as though the points would be shared.

But on 82 minutes Fox produced a moment of magic to lash home an unstoppable shot from the right corner of the penalty area to secure a brilliant victory for Pools.

“I was pleased for the lads because it was a hard game and they kept on going,” McGuckin commented.

“It was tough because Mansfield are a very physical side and a real threat from set-pieces but the boys stood up to the test and stuck to their principles so it was great to get the win.

“We showed some real quality in our end product to score three great goals and, of course, Brad's winner was the icing on the cake for us.”
