Youth Team Kick-Off Pre-Season In Style

Pools Youth Team got their pre-season campaign off to a winning start on Monday night when they thrashed their Spennymoor Town counterparts 7-1 at East Durham College.

It was an emphatic way to kick-off the warm-up campaign for Ian McGuckin’s youngsters who produced a high-tempo performance, dictating play for most of the game and enjoying some real joy in wide areas.

Liam Pritchard was a lively presence and caused constant problems for the visitors early on so it was no surprise when he had a hand in the opening goal, scampering on to Josh Bayne’s through ball before crossing to Joe Jackson who converted from close range.

Brad Fox made it 2-0 with a neat finish from the edge of the box before Spennymoor rallied to grab a goal back on the counter and bring themselves back in to the game.

However, Pools restored their two-goal advantage early in the second half when winger Aaron Willoughby cut inside and drilled a fine ball across goal which was deflected in to the net by a luckless defender.

Pritchard then followed suit by finding space on the wing to deliver a testing ball in to the penalty area and again it found its way in to the goal via a deflection from a defender to make it 4-1.

Man of the Match Pritchard then scored the goal of the game when he let fly with a rocket from the edge of the area which flew in to the top left-hand corner of the net leaving the keeper with no chance.

Josh Scott picked himself up quickly after being fouled to knock the free-kick in to the path of Jack Leonard who took advantage of Scott’s sharp thinking to fire in Pools’ sixth goal of the evening.

Fox then rounded-off the scoring with an excellent individual effort, breezing past three Town defenders and slotting home neatly to make it 7-1.

“It was a great start to our games schedule,” admitted McGuckin.

“We’re very happy with the efforts of the players and the way they went about it so we just need to try and carry that on in to the upcoming friendlies and in to the league action.”

The Youth Team’s next friendly is against Sunderland Academy at the Academy of Light on Saturday 14th July (11am kick-off).
