Pools Youth Team were beaten by defending champions Mansfield Town in their latest outing on Saturday.
Ian McGuckin’s men were always aware that it would be a tricky encounter against a Stags outfit who finished top of the pile last term and runners-up in the season before.
However, Pools’ cause was not helped by the concession of an early goal when keeper Alex Lawrence appeared to be blocked from a corner but this went unnoticed and Town took advantage to go in front.
The youngsters shrugged off the disappointment of going a goal behind and began to start enjoying some good possession as the half wore one, Lewis Orrell and Jon Weirs linking particularly effectively in midfield.
Pools got right on top of things at the start of the second half and were pressing their visitors on to the back foot, only to be hit by a sucker punch as Mansfield countered well to score against the run of play and make it 2-0.
The second goal knocked the stuffing out of Pools’ young line-up and they struggled to get a foothold back in the game as Town managed the remainder of the half to secure the points.
“We need to stop making silly mistakes because they’re costing us games at the moment,” rued McGuckin afterwards.
“We have to work hard on that this week because there were some very encouraging individual performances so if we stop making errors then we’ll give ourselves a better chance.”
