Pools Youth Team stormed in to the knockout stage of the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday with a win over Morecambe which secured their place at their top of the group.
Ian McGuckin’s men only needed a point to ensure they qualified for the next stage of the competition after winning their first two games to top the group.
However, the went through in style thanks to an impressive 3-0 triumph over The Shrimps at Blackhall Colliery’s Welfare Park at the weekend.
Pools began the game in determined fashion and went in front early on when a wide free-kick was delivered in to the box by Lewis Orrell and Jack Owen lost his man to convert the opening goal.
The youngsters drew confidence from the early strike and it was soon 2-0 as another Orrell delivery – this time from a corner – was headed home at the back post by Liam Pritchard.
Morecambe responded with a dangerous attack of their own but could not find a way past Pools keeper Elliot Stephenson who made a terrific save to stop a long-range effort from finding the net.
Pools could have made it 3-0 just before half-time but Joe Jackson drilled an effort just too high after being played through on goal by Danny Boyle following some good link-up play.
However, it didn’t take long for Pools to get back on the front foot at the start of the second half and after creating a series of opportunities they finally grabbed a third goal when Jack Cooper drove home from long-range.
“It was a good performance and the lads looked really comfortable throughout,” admitted McGuckin.
“We have had a good week in terms of progressing in the FA Youth Cup and Youth Alliance League Cup so now we have to turn our attentions back to the league and make sure we build a run there too.
“Everyone is really pleased with the way the lads are going about their work at the minute so long may that continue.”
