Pools Youth Team kicked-off their Youth Alliance Cup campaign with a group stage win over York City at Blackhall Welfare Park on Saturday.
Ian McGuckin has taken charge of the Club’s Youth Team this season and they got off to a very positive start at the weekend, taking the game to their visitors from the off.
The dominance of possession saw them create a number of early opportunities with Ryan Robinson going one-on-one with the keeper but just unable to force the ball home to open the scoring.
Liam Pritchard and Joe Jackson both also spurned decent chances to put Pools in front, while keeper Alex Lawrence protected the clean sheet with a fine save at the other end as City sprang forward.
The second half was a more scrappy affair in which the visiting side tightened things up and limited Pools to few opportunities on goal.
However, the youngsters kept on going and when a ball in to box wasn’t dealt with by the City defence, Jackson was on-hand to pounce and smash it in to the top corner to claim a late winner.
“I have to say that overall we deserved the victory,” McGuckin insisted afterwards.
“Some of the football we played in the first half was excellent so it was great to see them rewarded for that with a great win and some points on the board.
“Hopefully that gives the lads some confidence and it can be a platform for us to build on.”
