A very young Pools Reserve Team were beaten 3-0 in their opening game of the Central League season at Grimsby Town on Tuesday afternoon.
Matthew Bates and Ian McGuckin oversaw the action as members of the Youth Team and trialists Tomi Adeloye, Brandon McCarthy and Jacek Wuwer were given the chance to impress at Blundell Park.
There was a difficult start for Pools when the hosts were given a penalty with just nine minutes on the clock for a foul by Brooke Miller and Chris Clements tucked the ball home from the spot to hand Town the lead.
Pools youngsters responded well to the early setback and Jon Weirs came close to grabbing a leveller after some good build-up play down the left.
However, Grimsby doubled their lead right on the stroke of half-time when Harry Cardwell’s brilliant strike from outside the area flew in to the back of the net for 2-0.
The home side made the three points safe with a third goal nine minutes in to the second half, this time it was Jamille Matt who found enough space to fire past keeper Alex Lawrence.
Pools could have pulled a goal back ten minutes from the end but Joe Jackson’s left-foot shot went just too high after he met a delivery from a corner.
“The goals we conceded all came from our own errors, which is frustrating,” admitted Bates afterwards.
“We had some chances in the game and we huffed and puffed but we didn’t keep the ball well enough.
“I can’t fault their work-rate, the lads grafted hard and their attitude was great but it was the first time the majority of them have played against men so it’s a learning curve.”
