Match Preview: Pools at home to Dorking

29 September 2023

After a blow midweek, Hartlepool United are at home again as Dorking Wanderers come to the Suit Direct Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

The Lowdown

Dorking come into the fixture having won three of their last five fixtures. They're 14th in the National League and under the stewardship of founder, chairman, and manager Marc White, they're looking to build on their 16th-placed finish last season.

In contrast, Pools have won just one of their previous five games, defeating Dagenham & Redbridge away from home a fortnight ago. Last time out, John Askey's side fell to a 2-0 home defeat against Solihull Moors.

The History

The sides have never met before, so this is a chance for fans of both sides to tick off a new team.

Team News

Injuries continue to affect John Askey's options. Kieran Wallace and Alex Lacey both missed out on Tuesday evening, while Callum Cooke, Anthony Mancini, and Dan Dodds are long-term absentees. Zak Johnson is in line to continue in defence after making his debut on Tuesday, while Osazee Aghatise is still awaiting his first start in midfield.

How to Follow

Tickets can be purchased online or at the ticket office in the lead up to kick-off.

If you're not joining us at the Suit Direct, you can follow the action via National League TV here. Match passes cost £9.50 and grant you access to all streamed fixtures on the given day. Please note that matches at 3pm on a Saturday are not streamed in the UK, so audio-only coverage is available.

Match Report: Pools defeated by Dorking

30 September 2023

Hartlepool United suffered back-to-back 2-0 home defeats after Dorking Wanderers took all three points on their first-ever visit to the Suit Direct Stadium.

After Tuesday night’s defeat to Solihull Moors, Pools were equally disappointing as they didn’t force one save from the Wanderers keeper, with the visitors triumphing through second-half goals by Jason Prior and Tom Blair.

There was little positive from the home performance bar some brilliant saves from Pete Jameson, who prevented a heavier home defeat.

John Askey made one change to the side beaten 2-0 in midweek by high-flyers Solihull Moors, with Osazee Aghatise coming in for his first start. As a result, Josh Umerah moved down to the bench.

Pools got off to a bright start with Oliver Finney crowded out in the box after the first attack.

On 10 minutes, Mani Dieseruvwe headed over a difficult chance from close range from a David Ferguson cross.

Dorking had two of the best chances of a low-key first half and both fell to the head of Dan Gallagher, elder brother of Chelsea and England midfielder Connor.

Ten minutes from the break, the centre-back was afforded a free header at a Town End corner, only for Jameson to fly to his right to make an athletic save.

And the keeper was at it again on 41 minutes when he pulled off a stunning reaction save to thwart Gallagher when he looked favourite to score.

Pools threatened in a goalmouth scramble five minutes into the second half, but play was stopped for a head injury to Dorking forward Jason Prior, who required lengthy treatment.

When play resumed after Prior’s head was bandaged, an off-balance Dieseruvwe shot just wide of the keeper’s left post.

The bang had clearly done no harm to Prior, whose bandaged head put Dorking in front on 62 minutes. He met George Francomb's corner from the left and nodded in unmarked for his sixth goal of the season.

Ten minutes from time, Jameson rescued Pools again by keeping out sub Harry Ottaway’s free header with another superb stop.

An offside flag denied Pools an 83rd-minute leveller after Dieseruvwe turned in sub Josh Umerah’s powerful cross shot.

It got worse for Pools on 87 minutes when Wanderers sealed the deal with their second goal. Blair received the ball on the edge of the area and shot low into Jameson's left corner to send Dorking’s 81 fans into ecstasy.

Not even 11 added minutes could help Pools as the match petered out.

Pools: Jameson; Hendrie, Onariase, Johnson; Seaman (Umerah 81), Crawford, Aghatise (Wreh 67), Ferguson; Dieseruvwe, Grey

Subs (not used): Dixon, Burton, Paterson

Referee: Steven Copeland

Attendance: 4,002 (away 81)
