Match Preview: Chester at home in the FA Cup

13 October 2023

After last week’s morale-boosting win over Eastleigh, Hartlepool United turn their attention to the Emirates FA Cup as Chester head to the Suit Direct Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

The Lowdown

Pools come into the fixture in good spirits after a 3-1 win over Eastleigh last time out. The result leaves them in seventh, the final play-off place. After several players returning to full fitness, John Askey's side now looking to recapture the early promise that saw them briefly top to the table.

Chester compete in the National League North, one division below Pools. Calum McIntryre is at the helm and his side are currently 14th after 11 games, despite a third-place finish last season. They've already defeated Tadcaster Albion and Nantwich Town in the Emirates FA Cup this year.

Tom Crawford played for his hometown team Chester during the 2017/18 season, making 17 appearances and scoring once.

Should Saturday's fixture end in a draw, the game will be replayed at Chester's Deva Stadium on Tuesday night.

The History

The sides have met just twice previously, with both matches ending in a 1-1 draw. Crawford played for Chester during the away fixture as Michael Woods' goal secured the draw. At home, Jake Cassidy scored for Pools.

Team News

There are no changes to team availability following Saturday's victory. Kieran Wallace, Dan Dodds, Anthony Mancini and Callum Cooke are ruled out due to injury.

Match Report: Pools knocked out of Emirates FA Cup

14 October 2023

Hartlepool United exited the Emirates FA Cup at the first hurdle as Chester FC ran out 2-0 winners at the Suit Direct Stadium.

The game started with Pools on the front foot, as Umerah and Dieseruvwe looked to join up play at the top of the pitch. However, it was the visitors that took the lead early on. A driving run and smart pass from Burke found Whitehouse, and the attacker finished first-time from the edge of the box.

Pools put the pressure on straight from the restart, with an Umerah header looping into Stanway’s hands. Minutes later, Hendrie had a go from distance, but the ‘keeper got down low and held it well.

Askey’s side continued to see plenty of the ball, with Stanway forced to punch away a Ferguson cross and Crawford seeing a shot deflected behind. From the resulting corner, Dieseruvwe connected with the cross, but he couldn’t direct it.

Good work down the right saw Pools fashion a great chance, but Grey’s cross evaded everyone and rolled behind. Despite the pressure, Pools ended the first half behind.

The introduction of Agyemang saw Pools change shape at half-time, and it almost paid off immediately. Grey kept a free kick alive, and his low drive was palmed away by the ‘keeper and almost into danger.

Chances kept coming, with Chester defenders under pressure to repel Umerah and Dieseruvwe in particular. Despite the pressure, it was Chester who struck again. A ball through the middle left Onariase in a heap, with Caton sliding a shot under Jameson to double the lead.

After the restart, Wreh was introduced in place of Umerah, and he was a better first touch away from a huge change after Agyemang’s through-ball. Pools continued to press, but Chester’s well-organised defence stood firm. Another edge-of-the-box drive tested Stanway, but he pushed Crawford’s strike behind for a corner.

Chester saw out the game, and they’ll now progress to the first-round proper. Pools turn their attention back to the league and the visit to Aldershot Town next weekend.

Pools XI: Jameson; Hendrie, Lacey, Onariase, Johnson (Agyemang 46), Ferguson, Featherstone (Hastie 86), Crawford, Grey,  Umerah (Wreh 62), Dieseruvwe

Subs (not used): Dixon, Dolan, Burton, Paterson, Hastie, Agyemang, Wreh

Attendance: 3,205 (471 Away)
