Match Preview: Pools set for Bromley clash

25 November 2023

After an unbeaten week on the road, Hartlepool United return to home soil as they host Bromley at the Suit Direct Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

The Lowdown

Pools come into the fixture off the back of a win over York City last week and a midweek draw with Kidderminster. John Askey's side dominated much of each fixture, and they'll have plenty of momentum for this weekend's fixture. The results have seen Askey's men climb to 12th place, five points from the play-offs.

Bromley have started the season well, and they currently occupy third place in the National League. Managed by Andy Woodman, the Bromley side features a former Poolie in attack. Fela Olomola spent a season in blue and white, and he competes with serial goalscorer Michael Cheek up front for the Ravens.

The History

There have been just eight meetings between the sides previously, with Pools winning just twice. Bromley have won five times, while one match has ended in a draw. The teams last met in a play-off eliminator. A first-half brace for Rhys Oates and an early strike from Luke Armstrong gave Pools a 3-2 win.

Team News

Charlie Seaman and Matty Dolan will be monitored ahead of the fixture after struggling with recent knocks.

Pools' injury list still features Anthony Mancini, Dan Dodds, Luke Hendrie and Alex Lacey, though Mancini has resumed light training.

Match Report: Pools beaten by Bromley

25 November 2023

Goals from Michael Cheek, Ben Krauhaus and Olufela Olomola gave Bromley a 4-1 victory at the Suit Direct Stadium.

John Askey made two changes to the side that travelled to Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday night. There was a straight swap at left wing-back with David Ferguson coming in for Brody Paterson. And in the centre of defence, a late illness to Manny Onariase meant Kieran Burton was called into the 11.

Bromley’s opener came inside five minutes. Corey Whitley’s cross fell for an unmarked Cheek to slam home inside the box.

It could’ve been two after 20 minutes. Joe Mattock’s mistake put Whitley in the clear but Joel Dixon stood his ground one-on-one.

Hartlepool’s first chance came around the half-hour. Tom Crawford tried his luck from distance but his strike fell narrowly wide of the top left corner.

Mani Dieseruvwe had another big opportunity to find the leveller for Pools, after volleying Nicky Featherstone's corner off target at the back post.

Bromley made it two before the break as a corner from the left dropped to a lurking Cheek, who smashed his effort through a crowded box and into the bottom corner.

Hartlepool's afternoon got worse before seconds before half-time with Crawford being forced off the field due to injury. Askey decided on an attacking change, bringing on Josh Umerah.

And with the first chance of the second half, Pools pulled one back. Featherstone's corner found the head of Dieseruvwe, with his header proving too powerful for Grant Smith to keep out.

It took just three minutes before Bromley regained their two-goal cushion, however. A counter-attack saw Louis Dennis square to Krauhaus, who slotted home from inside the area.

The hosts created several chances in the second half - most notably with Callum Cooke hitting over and Ferguson forcing a big stop from Smith at his front post.

The Ravens wrapped it up in injury time however as Olomola, against his former side, went through on goal from a counter-attack and snuck an effort under Dixon.

Pools: Dixon, Johnson, Mattock, Burton, Hastie, Featherstone (Grey 65), Wallace, Ferguson, Crawford (Umerah 46), Cooke (Hancox 83), Dieseruvwe

Subs (not used): Jameson, Paterson

Bromley goals: Cheek (5, 43), Krauhaus (55), Olomola (90+1)

Attendance: 3547 (75 away)
