Match Preview: Pools welcome league-leading Chesterfield

15 December 2023

Amidst a busy run of Christmas fixtures, Hartlepool United welcome league leaders Chesterfield to the Suit Direct Stadium on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick-off).

The Lowdown

Pools come into the fixture off the back of an emphatic victory in the Isuzu FA Trophy. Despite going behind early on, John Askey's side ran out 5-1 winners against City of Liverpool last week. Hartlepool are currently 12th in the National League, eight points off the play-off positions.

Chesterfield are top of the pile in the National League. Seventeen wins from 21 matches sees them on 53 points, eight clear of Bromley in second. Their top scorer this season, Will Grigg, has Football League and international experience, and he'll be one of many dangermen this weekend.

The History

This will be the 97th first-class meeting between the sides, with Pools winning 38 of the previous matches, Chesterfield winning 43 times, and 15 fixtures ending in a draw. Earlier this season, early goals from Mani Dieseruvwe and Anthony Mancini were cancelled out by three Spireite strikes to give the hosts a 3-2 win. The game started a torrid run of injuries and form for Pools, with Mancini going off during the match.

Team News

Mitch Hancox will be available for Saturday, having missed last weekend due to being cup tied. Matty Dolan could also make a return after recovering from injury, though Charlie Seaman is still expected to be absent with a stomach problem.

Anthony Mancini returned to full training this week however Saturday will come too soon for the midfielder. Tom Crawford will also miss the fixture after suffering an ankle injury against Bromley. Pools' injury list still features Dan Dodds, Luke Hendrie and Alex Lacey.

Match Report: Pools defeated by league leaders

16 December 2023

An early Armando Dobra volley summoned Hartlepool United to a 0-1 defeat to league-leaders Chesterfield at the Suit Direct Stadium.

Ciaran Brennan made his league debut as John Askey named an unchanged starting eleven from last weeks 5-1 victory over City of Liverpool in the Isuzu FA Trophy.

It was a lively start to the game, as Hartlepool’s top-scorer Mani Dieseruvwe latched onto a long ball and rounded the keeper but couldn’t slot the ball home.

Chesterfield reacted by taking the lead after five minutes, as Armando Dobra volleyed the ball home from the edge of the box after a failed clearance from a corner.

Dobra could’ve grabbed his second, but his curled effort was saved comfortably by Joel Dixon on this occasion.

The home side reacted well, as Dieseruvwe found himself behind the Chesterfield defence once again but couldn’t steer his effort on target.

The visitors started the second half strong with a run of set pieces, but Pools were resilient in their defence.

On the 54th minute, Dobra did have the ball in the back of the Hartlepool net again, but Ollie Banks was deemed to have fouled Dixon in the build-up.

Chesterfield’s pressure was persistent though, as Banks this time found space on the Pools penalty area but hit his shot straight at Dixon.

With ten minutes to go, Chesterfield’s James Berry and Liam Mandeville both had chances but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Hartlepool did respond with some late pressure with five minutes to go as Callum Cooke linked up well with substitute Josh Umerah to create a chance, but saw his shot blocked.

Chesterfield captain Jamie Grimes had a late goal ruled out for offside, before Aaron Bannister blew the whistle for full-time, leaving Hartlepool sitting 15th in the National League.

Pools: Dixon, Brennan, Onariase, Ferguson, Hastie, Wallace (Hancox 60), Featherstone, Cooke, Grey (Umerah 70), Dieseruvwe

Subs (not used): Jameson, Johnson, Paterson

Chesterfield goal: Dobra (5)

Attendance: 4611 (989 away)
