Match Previews

Preview: Morecambe v Pools

7 April 2017

We turn our attentions to Saturday with a full and in-depth preview of our League Two trip to Morecambe.

Morecambe v Hartlepool United
Sky Bet League Two
Saturday 8th April 2017
Kick-Off: 3pm

In Opposition
After an excellent 1-1 draw at Portsmouth at the end of February, Morecambe were just six points outside the top seven but a dreadful run of seven straight defeats has seen them plunge down the table.

Jim Bentley’s men have struggled for form against the backdrop of uncertainty behind the scenes at The Globe Arena and they now find themselves just five points in front of Pools.

The Shrimps boss has been at the helm since 2011 but his connection with the club stretches back to 2002 and he revealed this week that he will consider his future at the end of the season.

Bentley has also insisted that his side still have work to do to ensure they don’t get dragged right in to a relegation fight so he will be determined to see them end their slump against Pools this weekend.

Star Man
Kevin Ellison might now be 38-years-old but the veteran front man continues to cause problems for League Two defences and Pools will need to keep an eye on him this weekend.

The much-travelled star has been a regular again for The Shrimps this season and has hit the net seven times in all competitions so far.

A whole-hearted performer who will battle for everything as well as provide a goal threat, Ellison will be hoping he can help turn around Morecambe’s fortunes during the run-in.

Last Meeting
Pools 3 (Amond 10, Paynter pen 14, Featherstone 24)
Morecambe 2 (Fleming 52, Mullin 90)
Sky Bet League Two
Friday 30th December 2016

Pools: Carson, Donnelly, Harrison, Nsiala, Carroll, Featherstone, Woods (Laurent 82), Deverdics (Oates 72), Hawkins, Amond, Paynter (Alessandra 59).
Subs not used: Bartlett, Richards, Walker, Orrell.

Morecambe: Roche, McGowan, Edwards, Winnard, Conlan (Mullin 31), Jennings (Molyneux 66), Rose, Murphy, Ellison, Fleming, Turner (Wildig 73).
Subs not used: Nizic, Wakefield, Massanka, Whitmore.

Head To Head
Saturday’s game will be just the ninth competitive meeting between the two clubs and Pools have the edge, having won six of the previous encounters.

Pools have won on each of the last four occasions the clubs have met, with The Shrimps’ only win coming when they triumphed 2-0 at The Vic in December 2014.

The Globe Arena has been a lucky venue for Pools over the years – we’ve played their three times in total and come away with a victory on every occasion.

Andy Haines will be in charge of his ninth Pools game this weekend when he is the man on the whistle for our trip to The Globe Arena.

The official last presided over a Pools game as recently as February when he watched us draw 1-1 with Plymouth Argyle at The Northern Gas and Power Stadium.

Haines was also in the region to oversee our 2-2 draw with Newport County in the opening month of the current campaign.

His most recent outing was on Tuesday evening when he was on duty for MK Dons’ 2-0 win at Charlton Athletic in League One.

Match Reports

We Could Have Had More - Jones

8 April 2017

Dave Jones felt his side deserved more from today’s game with Morecambe.

The Pools boss saw his side control the game up to half time but an improved second half from the hosts saw Jones’s side pegged back for a point.

“It’s a deserved point, but it should have been more,” Jones said after the match.

“But football treats you like that sometimes and if we don’t cut out the mistakes, we get punished.

“We totally dominated the first half and the second half was fairly even but then we give a goal away to make it 1-1.

“If we’d have gone two up, I felt we would have got on top. We got in areas where we could do harm but the final ball is letting us down.

“We were comfortable as you can be first half, with a lot of the ball, but sometimes you don’t do the damage with it.

“Their manager will have had a go at them at half time and it’s on our part down to a lack of experience that we haven’t dealt with that reaction.

“But I can’t fault them they worked their socks off.

“It’s a point, it is disappointing not to get three and that’s the annoying thing.

“But we were away from home against a team struggling and they were never going to roll over.”
