I Couldn’t Have Asked For More – Sweeney

Antony Sweeney, Aldershot Town v Hartlepool United

Antony Sweeney admitted that his side rode their luck at times during victory at Aldershot Town but paid tribute to the players for their performance at the end of a tough few days.

The Caretaker Manager enjoyed a dream debut in the Pools dugout as goals from Josh Hawkes, Gavan Holohan and Nicke Kabamba ensured a 3-0 triumph at The EBB Stadium.

“We’ve played a lot better than that and lost games,” he told Pools TV.

“To win 3-0, get the clean sheet and see some of the work we’ve done with certain players in terms of getting in to the six-yard box come to fruition was very positive.

“I can’t ask any more from the players. It’s been a tough week with very little contact time and no training since Wednesday so to put in the performance they did, I can’t ask any more.

“The early goal gave us a lift and it was a pity we couldn’t score the penalty because I thought that would have settled us in to the game a little bit more.

“Sporadically, I thought we played some good stuff but, let’s be honest – they had a fair few chances and on another day they would have scored some goals but sometimes you need that bit of luck.

“Fair play to Ben, he’s come in for some criticism early in his career here but his performance today was outstanding and without him they would definitely have scored a few.

“I sensed their was a disappointment about the players after this week’s news so I just told them that the best way to show that was to go out and show that we’re a good team and we’re not far off being one that can rise up the table.

“We just have to stick together because there is a good group of players there and today I appreciated every bit of effort they put in for me.”
