I Can’t Thank The Fans Enough – Sweeney

Antony Sweeney, Hartlepool United

Antony Sweeney has admitted that he enjoyed the crowd’s reaction to him at the end of Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Notts County – but insisted that the players must take the main acclaim.

Pools looked on course to be only the second side this season to take maximum points at Meadow Lane when goals from Gavan Holohan and Luke James put them in the driving seat.

But the home side grabbed a lifeline right on half-time and then claimed a leveller in the second half to rescue a share of the points from an entertaining encounter.

Some 759 Pools fans made the trip to cheer the lads on and they gave the players and the staff a thunderous reception on the final whistle.

“It was a magnificent away following and they never stopped throughout the game,” Sweeney told Pools TV.

“The fans have been good to me not just during this tenure of four games but for the best part of 14 or 15 years so I can’t thank them enough for that.

“The fans were really good all afternoon and hearing them singing my name at the end was a touching moment for me.

“But it’s the players who deserve the main plaudits. We put them in a to a shape and a structure where we believe they will flourish in games but they’re the ones who have to execute it, finish the goals and put their bodies on the line.”
