Pools Youth Team completed a league double over Burton Albion this afternoon with a well-deserved 1-0 away win at the FA Training Centre.
Micky Barron's men started the game slowly but as time wore on they got in to their stride and began to cause their hosts problems.
Neither side really created too many openings in a closely-fought first half, though Chay Liddle did have a half chance to hit the net but put an effort just wide.
The game opened up more after the break as Pools got their passing game going and they took the lead eight minutes in to the second half with a fine goal.
A ball found its way across to box to Callum Martin who took a touch before drilling a shot in to the top corner, beating the keeper for pace at his near post.
After that it looked unlikely that Burton could find a route back in to the game as Barron's boys went in search of a decisive second goal.
However, opportunities came and went as Pools applied the pressure with Martin spurning and opening to fire a second, while Daniel Johnson and substitute Steven Snaith both also came close.
In the end, the one goal was all that was needed to clinch the points and Barron was pleased with the way his players had improved after a sloppy beginning to the game.
"I thought we'd stayed on the bus for the first half," he explained.
"It looked like the three-hour journey and an early start had taken something out of us and the lads seemed a little weary.
"However, we were much brighter in the second half and knocked the ball around well to take the game to Burton.
"If we can now avoid any more postponements and get a run of games then we should enjoy a good end to the season."
