Youth Team Put Millers To The Sword

Posted on: Tue 17 Feb 2009

The Youth Team celebrated their return to action with a fine win over Rotherham United at Chester-le-Street on Saturday morning.

Micky Barron's men were on top from the off and easily brushed aside their visitors with a powerful attacking performance on home soil.

The goals began arriving early when just after the ten-minute mark Jak Quantrill's long throw caught out the Millers defence and Lee Mason ran in to score from a tight angle.

Mason did not have to wait long to double his tally and when he put clean through by a ball over the top he finished clinically to make it 2-0.

As the half time whistle approached, Pools gave themselves further breathing space when Paul Johnson's corner was turned in by Dylan Purvis.

The tempo didn't drop after the break and Quantrill's throw-ins were causing further problems for Rotherham and this time Marc Ellison volleyed home from twelve yards.

A rare defensive lapse from Pools saw the visitors pull a goal back, but this was soon forgotten after Anthony Wakefield exchanged passes with Mason before firing in the fifth.

"The whole squad deserve a lot of credit for that performance," Barron commented.

"It's the type of display that I've felt has been coming and I'm really pleased with the way we played - we could easily have scored a few more goals too," he added.
