Pools Knocked Out Of FA Youth Cup
Pools Youth Team were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup at the First Round stage on Tuesday night as a strong Carlisle side ran out 4-1 winners at Victoria Park.
Micky Barron's youngsters were quickly put on the back foot by their energetic visitors with the Cumbrians roaring in to a two goal lead inside ten minutes.
The first arrived with only a couple of minutes on the clock and it was a quite wonderful strike from Jonny Black which flew in to the top corner from twenty yards.
It got worse for Pools on nine minutes when a long throw-in from the left was flicked on at the near post and Liam Davison drove the ball home from inside the area.
Pools finally began to find their feet as the half wore on and began to create some chances themselves - the dangerous Lee Mason denied brilliantly by Carlisle keeper Alex Mitchell after a burst through the centre of defence.
However, if Blake's early strike for the visitors was spectacular then the goal from Jak Quantril that put Pools back in touching distance was simply sublime. The full back picked the ball up inside the Carlisle half and, with little on in front of him, he unleashed an unstoppable shot right in to the top corner of Mitchell's net.
And it could even have been all square before the break as Mason once again broke through the visitors rearguard but this time Mitchell made an even better save to block his shot and collect the rebound as it looped back towards goal.
The second half was set up nicely then as Pools looked to find a route back in to the game - Marc Ellison exchanged passes with the strong Daryl Scaife but the final shot was too high.
Disaster struck on the hour mark though when a long looping free-kick towards the back post found Tom Aldred and the Carlisle centre-back diverted the ball home to make it 3-1.
Pools kept battling on but the visitors secured their passage in to Round Two when the impressive Andy Cook's shot was blocked well by home keeper Nick Thomas only for substitute John Seaton to tap home the rebound.
Cook was then superbly denied by Thomas after wriggling in to space in the area, while Thomas also made an outstanding save to prevent Seaton scoring his second of the game.
"I thought that after a sloppy start we reacted quite well and had a good 35-minute period where we could have got ourselves back in to the game," Barron commented afterwards.
"I was happy with the response from the boys after going two down and Jak's goal was fantastic to get us back in it.
"But in the second half we didn't deal with a couple of crosses in to the box and that was the difference - once Carlisle's third went in I thought it was game over really.
"Hopefully we'll learn from this though; you get nights like this with young players and it's now about how we bounce back," he added.
