Darryl Scaife's hat-trick helped the Youth Team to a 5-2 win over Lincoln City on Saturday as Micky Barron's men got their first victory of the new season.

The result at Chester-le-Street was never really in doubt as Pools took the game by the scruff of the neck from the off, getting their noses in front with just seven minutes on the clock.

Lincoln's keeper failed to deal with Billy Blackford's cross and Scaife reacted quickest to fire home the rebound and make it 1-0.

City hit back with an equaliser just short of the half hour mark, but Pools restored their lead Callum Martin's corner was converted by a spectacular overhead kick from Jack Sharples.

Martin was again the provider for Pools' third goal of the afternoon when his free-kick was turned in to the net by Scaife to make it 3-1.

Barron's youngsters were playing in to a strong wind after the break but they still managed to keep the upper hand for the most part despite conceding a goal early after the restart.

Lee Mason soon made it 4-2 though with a header at the near post from Blackford's cross, and the striker could have had another moments later but his low drive hit the post.

However, when Callum Martin delivered another cross in to the box, Mason did add a second goal to his tally when he rose highest to head home.

And Scaife rounded off the scoring to complete his hat-trick with fifteen minutes left when he turned in Blackford's free-kick at the near post.

"I was delighted with the performance obviously," Barron commented.

"We haven't been getting the results that our performances have warranted this season but things came together for us against Lincoln.

"The conditions were difficult to play in at times but the lads got the ball down and tried to play football as much as possible."
