Reserves Edge Seven Goal Thriller

Posted on: Wed 22 Oct 2008

Pools Reserves carried on where the First Team left off as they defeated York City 4-3 at Billingham Town tonight.

The goals were raining in as Pools scored all four of their goals in the first half and, despite a determined fightback from City, Ian Butterworth's men hung on for the win.

Pools started the game brightly with Matty Tymon sending a header just too high and Michael Mackay's deflected shot from the edge of the box brilliantly turned over by City keeper Josh Mimms.

The goal did arrive on the quarter hour mark though when Jonny Rowell's incisive ball sent Tymon through and he produced a wonderful lobbed finish to put Pools ahead.

The lead lasted all of sixty seconds though as a youthful City side hit back through Steven Hogg who finished neatly from the right side of the box.

Matty Robson fired Pools back in to the lead ten minutes later with a quick piece of thinking from a free-kick. The winger noticed the City keeper creeping from his line and whipped his right wing delivery straight in to the goal at the near post.

Mackay saw another shot saved after a good break from David Foley but then Pools raided down the left and when Rowell crossed it was Gary Liddle whose looping header found the top corner.

Foley then saw a low drive cannon back off the post as Pools thoroughly dominated and a fourth goal arrived after Mackay chased on to Joe Tait's clearance, brought the ball down with an exquisite first touch and then despatched in to the bottom corner with his second touch.

At half time it seemed to be a case of how many Pools would score but, after a half time rollicking, City came out fighting and made it 4-2 when Onome Sodje played it inside for substitute Adam Boyes to score.

And it was 4-3 when a sustained period of pressure from the visitors led to the ball being fed right for Simon Russell who drove the ball in to the net despite the best efforts of Mark Cook.

However, City seemed to run out of steam after that and they couldn't open up the Pools defence again and Butterworth's side held out for the three points.
