Reserves Pull Off Great Win At Leeds
Pools Reserves registered a stunning performance at Elland Road to defeat a strong Leeds United side 2-1 in the Totesport.com League tonight.
An own goal in the first half and a belter from David Foley after the break were enough to undo the hosts who fielded six of the eleven players who started against Pools in the Carling Cup tie there last week.
The game started in tight fashion with neither side able to really create many openings but it was Pools who struck first though they were given a helping hand by Leeds.
Matty Robson had found his range with a string of excellent deliveries in to the box and one proved too good for centre-back Paul Huntington who could only turn the ball in to his own net.
It looked as though Pools would hold the advantage going in to half time but a deflected shot from the edge of the area deflected off Ben Clark and past the helpless Mark Cook.
However, Ian Butterworth's men began the second half strongly and enjoyed the lion-share of possession going forward, with Cook looking solid when called upon.
The decisive goal arrived when David Foley - who was terrorising the Leeds defence at will - picked up the ball back to goal thirty yards out, spun his man and lashed and let fly in to the corner of the net.
It was a goal worthy of winning any game and Cook's brilliant save with his feet from Enoch Showunmi's late header ensured that it did.
