Tymon Brace Seals Pools Win

Posted on: Wed 02 Apr 2008

Matty Tymon's second half penalty was the difference at Victoria Park as Pools Reserves beat Leeds United 2-1 to go joint top of the Pontins Holidays league.

Pools started the game quite brightly with Matty Tymon going close in the early ,inutes but his shot was deflected wide of target.

Leeds responded well though and a clever ball through by Seb Sorsa set Nathan Cartman away but his chipped effort landed on the top of the net.

Jan Budtz made a good save just minutes later when Tom Elliott swivelled and sent a low shot in at goal.

However, it was took the leas mid-way through the half when some lovely skill by Jonny Rowell on the right side of the penalty area produced enough space for him to lift a left-footed cross onto the head of Matty Tymon who found the net.

Leeds came straight back at Pools, with wide men Sorsa and Shane O'Connor looking particularly dangerous and when the latter cut a ball back for Elliott on the edge of the box, a low shot was enough to beat Budtz and find the back of the net.

Pools were quickly on the offensive after the break and the impressive Rowell tested the goalkeeper with a twenty-five yard free kick and Michael Mackay's follow up was cleared off the line.

However, Pools didn't have to wait long to restore their lead when Craig Ruddy's clever through-ball was chased by Tymon who was upended by Leeds keeper Alan Martin.

Tymon brushed himself down and coolly slotted away the penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way from the spot.

Leeds had chances to come back on level terms - their best when Elliott headed over from close range after a pin-point left wing cross while at the other end, Mackay hit a a post from a tight angle after taking the ball around the goalkeeper.

David Foley could have wrapped things up in injury time but after bursting through the Leeds defence, the keeper did well to palm away his powerful shot.

There was a last-gasp escape for Pools when Ollie Hotchkiss drilled a free kick into the wall just seconds before the referee blew for full time.
