A Michael Mackay hat-trick sealed a comfortable 3-0 win for Pools Reserves over Lincoln City this afternoon.

Two first-half goals and a second-half header were more than enough in what was a lively display from Ian Butterworth's side.

A poignant minute's silence was held prior to kick off at Victoria Park in memory of Michael Maidens.

Pools were straight out of the traps as they pressed the visitors from the off and the first goal came just after the five minute mark.

Good play by Antony Sweeney saw play pushed right into the area and, after contributions from David Foley and Matty Robson, Michael Rae fired a shot at goal which was blocked by Ayden Duffy in the visiting goal.

But Mackay pounced at the right time to hit home the rebound and make it the perfect start for Pools.

Lincoln City had a couple of chances to draw level, with John-Lewis heading over and Clarke firing over from close range.

And John-Lewis went close to firing in an own goal when he rose to deal with a corner and only just cleared the cross bar with a powerful header.

But Pools took advantage from the corner kick when Rae got up to flick on the ball into the path of the lively Mackay who smashed it in from close range to make it 2-0.

Mackay could have had his hat-trick before the break when he executed a great diving header from a Foley cross but the ball edged just wide of the far post.

And Pools had more chances to extend their lead in the second period; Mackay saw his turn and shot from the edge of the area go narrowly wide of the post while Godwin Antwi saw his powerful headed effort deflect wide for a corner.

Turnbull played the resulting corner short to Ali Gibb and his pinpoint cross into the area was headed just over the bar by Rae.

Martin Young almost caught the keeper off-guard with a searching cross-come-shot from wide right of the area but Duffy got a touch on the ball and tipped it into Foley's path. Unfortunately for Pools, Foley's rebound shot was cleared.

Just after the hour mark and Mackay's hat trick was sealed; Turnbull put another corner into the area and, after a scramble for possession, the ball was flicked into the back of the net by the head of the Pools' striker.

Sub Johnny Rowell went desperately close to bagging a late solo goal when he forced his way past three defenders and into the area but his final shot went just wide of the far post.
