The creative midfielder became Chris Turner's second signing of the 2009 summer when he agreed a move from troubled League One rivals Stockport County.
Born in Cork, the talented winger was spotted playing for his hometown club and brought to England by Leicester City in 2001.
However, things didn't work out for him with the Foxes and after several loan spells he returned to Ireland and re-signed for Cork, where he helped the Irish outfit to the FAI Ford Cup in 2007.
Stockport boss Jim Gannon persuaded him to take a second chance on English football in the January transfer window of 2008 and he played a big role in helping the Hatters in to League One.
After 58 appearances and six goals, one of them against Pools in March 2009, McSweeney was snapped up by Pools as County's financial problems took hold.
He started the 2009/2010 campaign in energetic style but fell out of favour mid-season, only to return with some strong performances in a right-back role and finish the season as one of the form players.
