What's In A Name: Peter Hartley

Posted on: Thu 11 Mar 2010

Peter Hartley is next up in our 'What's In A Name' feature as we find out more about the Hartlepool-born defender both on and off the pitch.

This article was first published in our matchday programme, Never Say Die.

P is for 'Pistol Pete'

"I had that on my boots at the beginning of the season but I took a bit of stick and I think I was a bit premature to have that so I've put them on the back burner for now until I score a few more! Kevin Ball called me it at Sunderland because I used to have short back and sides like a soldier and it's just stuck."

E is for Easy Decision

"Signing for Pools was an easy decision because it was obvious I wasn't going to play if I stayed at Sunderland this season. I want to play football and when the opportunity arose to come here, the decision made itself really."

T is for Team Spirit

"I've only ever been at Sunderland and Chesterfield but the team spirit at this Club is ridiculous - the banter and crack in general is good, better than I have ever seen!"

E is for Education

"I've just got my certificate through for completing my first year of an Accountancy course - I've got two more years to go and then I will be a fully qualified accountant, and all by the age of 23!"

R is for Red Card

"Do we have to talk about that?! Let's just say it was a lesson learned."

H is for Home Town Club

"Most of the time it is good playing for your own town but, when the team are not doing so well, it can be a little frustrating when people come up to you. Everyone in general seems pleased with what I am doing though and that I am here and I'm enjoying it - hopefully the fans are too."

A is for Away From Football

"Watching Entourage is taking up a lot of my time away from football at the minute - I'm loving that. I watch a lot of TV and see my girlfriend a lot - I'm like her skivvy, picking her up all the time!"

R is for Refund

"When we had that play off game with Bristol City in 2003, I bought tickets in the Millhouse Stand and my seats were on the steps. The steward tried to move me but I showed him my tickets and the numbers were there on the steps - I couldn't believe it and had to move every time someone wanted to get past. So I'm still waiting for my refund from that!"

T is for Tranmere Goal

"I got a bit excited when I celebrated - I didn't want the game to start again, I wanted to get straight to the bar!! It's was good to get my first League goal - hopefully there will be plenty more to come."

L is for Lottery Win

"Funnily enough I was talking about this the other day with Clarky and I said that if I'd won that £65million, I'd just bring a million pounds in for the lads to share and tell them to have a nice life and then I'd be off with my £55m enjoying it!"

E is for Extra Work In The Community

"We definitely do a lot - I have been to loads of different places this season. I think it is good for the fans if they see you about, they get to know more about you as a person. When you are out on the pitch, you are just seen as a player but through the community work we do, you get known more for the person you are."

Y is for Younger Days

I was so single-minded as a young lad, there was nothing else I was interested in doing apart from playing football. I wanted to play in the Premier League but I think that's everyone's dream and just to make a living out of football is what I wanted to do. I was very focussed on making it and I think I'm still a bit like that."
