Joel Porter was back in the starting eleven for Tuesday night's 4-3 win over Southend United.

And the Aussie striker was delighted to play his part in the victory - admitting that the final result took him back to previous seasons at the Club,

"It was more like the Pools of old, Porter told the Official Website.

"We concede two or three goals and score four or five. It reminds me of a couple of years ago.

"But it is great to see the lads back playing some good football again and playing well."

Although Pools did concede the three goals, Porter insists it was the win that was much more important to the side last night,

"We conceded a few goals but we can work on that - there were more positives.

"The main thing was the three points and getting back on track - even if it was 8-7 or 9-8. It didn't matter how many we conceded as long as we got the three points last night.

"We will look back on how we went wrong defensively as a unit and work that out but if we can keep scoring four goals every week we'll win most of our games."

But the lively striker knows that the Pools' fans want to see more than just goals at The Vic, they want whole-hearted performances from the players,

"I think it doesn't matter if you're playing in the Premiership or League Two, fans of every Club want to see their players playing with their hearts of their sleeves, winning tackles and chasing down.

"That is what really gets them excited, sometimes if you put in a good tackle it gets them more excited than a goal would."

Although if Porter himself had managed to find the back of the net last night, The Vic fans would surely have been up celebrating wildly.

But, for all he tried, he just failed to hit the target,

"I'm not a selfish player - I like setting them up!" Porter joked.

"I'm bemused over how I didn't get a goal last night but as long as I am getting those chances then it'll come.

"There were a couple of chances when I could've scored but Browny (James Brown) could have had another two or three and so could Barks (Richard Barker).

"It was a good team performance on the whole and we just need to look at those lapses of concentration in defence again."

And, while Porter is confident that Pools' form will improve this season, he understands some of the concern that the fans may be feeling,

"I think it is bringing a few memories back for a lot of the fans with the way we have pretty much capitulated over the last ten weeks and you can understand that but the Gaffer has faith in us boys and we have faith in each other to get out of it.

"Although we are close to the bottom of the table, we are also close to the top six and if we start putting a run of wins together, we could be back up there and we are confident we can achieve that."
