New To League One: Sheffield Wednesday

Posted on: Wed 21 Jul 2010

Relegated from the Championship on a dramatic last day finale, Sheffield Wednesday will rejoin Pools in League One next term.

Who's in charge?

Alan Irvine was unable to prevent the Owls from slipping back in to League One but the club have kept faith with the amiable Scot. He took over at Hillsborough in January following the departure of long-serving Owls boss Brian Laws. Irvine had previously been in charge at Preston North End, whom he joined after cutting his teeth as Assistant Manager to David Moyes at Everton.

Where do they play?

Hillsborough hardly needs an introduction given its stature as one of the countries most famous stadiums. A regular venue for FA Cup semi-finals in the past, it retains a capacity of almost 40,000 though the Owls once crammed in 73,000 for 1924 cup tie. It's been home to Sheffield Wednesday since 1899 and will be one of the grounds that Pools look forward to visiting most in the new campaign.

How did they get here?

Chants of 'We'll never play you again' towards the end of the 2005 Play-Off Final with Pools will come back to haunt Owls fans this season. And relegation last term could hardly have happened in crueller circumstances as they came out second best in a winner-takes-all last day battle with beleaguered Crystal Palace at Hillsborough. They've rarely set the Championship alight since returning there following their victory over Pools, but avoiding relegation was the least that their long-suffering fans would have expected last term.

When did we last meet?

While the painful memories of the Play-Off Final still live on, it's not the last time that Pools met with Sheffield Wednesday, though the Carling Cup tie in August 2007 was also hard to bear. Pools took the lead just after half time through Ian Moore but Deon Burton's goal forced extra time and Wednesday won it with Yoann Folly's last gasp goal.

CT says…

"I feel Sheffield Wednesday will find it very difficult due to the bigger signings having left the club due to financial reasons. It all depends whether Alan Irvine is able to recruit the type of player to compete at the top of League One. Remember, they will have 26,000 watching them play every other week and those sorts of gates should allow them to pay higher wages than other clubs. Their recruitment process will be vital in whether they can mount a challenge in their first season down."
