What's In A Name: Colin Larkin

Posted on: Wed 02 Jun 2010

Colin Larkin is next up in this regular feature as we place the Irishman in our hotseat.

This article was first published in the Club's Matchday Programme 'Never Say Die'.

C is for Childhood Ambitions

"I always wanted to be a footballer, it's as simple as that. Even at school - and it is bad saying this - but I had no interest really because I always wanted to be a footballer. I was decent at school as well but I had other things on my mind and as soon as I was in from school, I would be back out playing football."

O is for Opening The Goal Account

"It is always good to get off the mark, especially at a new club. My first goal was against Walsall and I just remember James Brown putting me through and the keeper was off his line and I just put it over him. It is always special getting off the mark to break your duck because it can start to hang over you."

L is for Life At Pools

"It has been great so far - the lads have been brilliant and I have settled in so quickly. I have moved up here and I think that has helped a lot in terms of the travelling. It has been a little frustrating with the few little injuries I have had along the way so far."

I is for Irish Football

"I always try and keep my eye out for my home town of Dundalk - they finished mid table this year which is obviously better than relegation. I speak to Denis about football back home. Maybe I'll see out the end of my career at home or go into coaching there."

N is for Nicknames

"I haven't got a lot to be honest - well, none I can mention in the Programme! 'Larks' is the main one, back in home in Ireland I get 'Locksy' and then I also get 'Pop' obviously from the Darling Buds of May!"

L is for Lucky Omens

"I haven't got many superstitions but I do tend to always do anything left before right, left shin pad, left sock, left leg - left is always first!"

A is for Away From Football

"Just hanging out with my wife and daughter, taking my little one to the cinema or the park. As for other hobbies, I really enjoy watching the boxing - I went to watch the Amir Khan fight in Newcastle recently."

R is for Right Or Left Wing

"I'd definitely prefer to be played as a striker but I just enjoy playing, whether that is central midfield, in goal, anywhere. On recent form before my injury, the left wing has been better but I do enjoy playing up front and getting goals."

K is for Kidderminster Loan Move

"It was awesome. I had just got into the first team at Wolves but the manager thought I wasn't ready so I went to Kidderminster on loan. Jan Molby was the manager there and he was playing 4-3-3 and he didn't even want me to defend, which is any striker's dream. I think I finished with seven goals and ten assists. The lads there were brilliant and I saw the rest of the season out there. After that, I just wanted to play football, I didn't want to be in the Reserves, which I would have been at Wolves and luckily Mansfield Town came in and bought me."

I is for Irish Contingent at Pools

"I think a lot of the lads can't really understand Denis Behan; I think he maybe speaks too fast for them. Leon is another good character, great at the practical jokes and voices, taking people off."

N is for Nice Wheels

"I drive a Renault Megane - I wouldn't exactly describe it as 'nice wheels' but it gets me from 'A' to 'B' which is all I need!"
