An Adam Boyd hat-trick fired Pools to a convincing win over a young GrimsbyTown side at BillinghamTown tonight.
The visitors gave as good as they got in the opening period of the game but Pools' ruthless finishing in front of goal exposed them towards the interval and in the end it could have been even more than the 5-0 score line.
Pools fired warning shots early on through Jonny Rowell and Boyd while at the other end Jemmal Shahin tested Mark Cook who saved well to his right.
The scoring was opened with a sweet goal from Colin Larkin who found space on the left edge of the 18 yard box to volley a neat strike into the far corner.
Adam Boyd added to the lead with a beautiful curling effort after a smart turn on the edge of the box.
It didn't take Pools long after the break to get back into their stride as Boyd rose well at the far post to head in Jon-Andre Fredriksen's whipped left-wing cross.
Boyd completed his treble in fantastic fashion when a clever back heel from Armann Bjornsson set the striker through on goal and he finished clinically into the top corner with the outside of his right boot.
Triallist Reece Jones added gloss to the win with a sensational long range effort which caught the Grimsby keeper out and flew into the top corner.
Colin West had asked his side to show more of an aggressive streak in the final third and the delivered to punish their young visitors.
