We Must Aim For Last Day Win - Sweeney

Posted on: Wed 29 Apr 2009

When it comes to final-day drama with Pools, Antony Sweeney has seen it all.

The midfielder played a key role for the Club in one of our biggest final-day fights, scoring the crucial goal back in May 2005 to seal a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth and secure a spot in the play offs.

This season though, Sweeney will be involved in an altogether different game when he takes to the field with Pools to try and get the result to make sure the Club remain in League One.

"I think this one would be more important than the Bournemouth game," Sweeney told hartlepoolunited.co.uk.

"I just remember Tommy Butler crossing the ball and it was just one of those where you shut your eyes and hope for the best.

"Luckily I just headed it in at the far post - I'd definitely take one of them on Saturday but it would be much more important to keep our league status."

And Pools will go out on Saturday with the aim of beating Bristol Rovers and not relying on other results to secure safety in League One,

"I think we have to go there to win.

"Bristol Rovers have had a few dodgy results since their season effectively ended with them safe in mid table and another one of them on their part will do us.

"We know we are more than capable of winning and we have to go there with that aim.

"If we go to draw and lose out, things are then left in the lap of the gods but if we go out to win and get a draw, that is still alright."

At Pools' recent overnight stay ahead of the Yeovil Town game, Millwall stayed at the same hotel prior to their game with Bristol Rovers.

Before leaving the hotel, many would have assumed that if one team were to get the away result, it would have been Kenny Jackett's outfit.

But Millwall went to The Memorial Stadium and left with a 4-2 hiding from Rovers - proof if it were needed that Paul Trolloppe's side can prove more than a match for any team on their day,

"Millwall are one of the better teams in the league - we have played them twice and lost twice and I don't think anyone saw that result coming.

"That will be in the back of our minds - we know that Bristol are more than capable of scoring goals against teams. We just have to make sure that doesn't happen against us."

And while last-day drama is always popular with the media and the neutral, Sweeney admits the players would have preferred a quieter end to the campaign - or a fight more like the one at Bournemouth four years' ago,

"I think we all wanted it sewn up a long time ago and we have had chances to do it.

"We were 2-0 up against Millwall and threw that away and we have conceded some stupid goals and when you look back at the season, you think we should have had those points and been further up the table.

"But you know Hartlepool and we always leave it to the last game of the season - we just hoped the battle would have been higher up the table."
