Mason Goal Secures Youth Team Win
Pools Youth Team maintained their return to form on Saturday with a hard-earned 1-0 away win over Bradford City.
Lee Mason's 12th goal of the season midway through the second half was enough to separate the sides and give Micky Barron's men their second successive victory.
Pools had the better of the chances throughout the game and continued to try and pass it around despite a bobbly pitch proving troublesome at times.
In-form youngster Daniel Johnson had the first opening of the game when he was played in by Michael Pearson but the City defenders did well to scramble the ball clear of danger.
Paul Johnson had a header saved from a corner and Jordan Richard fired just wide from distance, while at the other end Grant Herbert made a fine double save to keep Bradford at bay.
Pools began the second half at a higher tempo and they started to knock the ball around with real confidence, Daniel Johnson almost benefitting but his shot was brilliantly saved by the keeper.
The breakthrough came when Daniel Johnson played a neat ball in to Mason who had the time to turn and shoot from the edge of the box and put Pools in front.
The hosts responded well in the closing stages as they went in search of an equaliser but the Pools defensive line held firm with Herbert helping them out by collecting plenty of high balls in to the box.
"It was a really good performance from the lads and I think we just about shaded it," Barron commented afterwards.
"At half time we asked the lads if they could get the ball down a bit more, pass it better and try and support the front men and they did that well.
"Lee took his goal well and we looked strong at the back once we'd got in to the winning position so I'm pleased," he added.
