Youth Team Get Back To Winning Ways
Two goals from Lee Mason and another from youngster Daniel Johnson helped Pools Youth Team to a confidence-boosting 3-1 win over Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.
Micky Barron's men had previously lost their last four games in the Youth Alliance League but a dominant performance meant a return to winning ways at Chester-le-Street.
"I was absolutely delighted with the whole display from the lads," Barron told us.
"We were positive in our approach from the first whistle and looked to take the game to Doncaster so it was pleasing to get the three points.
"Hopefully we can carry this kind of form in to our last couple of games and end the season on a bit of a high," he added.
Pools could have been ahead inside fifteen minutes but two good chances came and went before Chay Liddle got through one on one but saw his shot cleared to safety.
However, for all their possession they didn't work the Rovers keeper as much they could have and paid for it when the visitors took the lead before half time after making the most of a long through ball.
With an injury to Anthony Wakefield, Pools were forced in to a change at half time and substitute Daniel Johnson made an immediate impact.
Only a minute after the restart Callum Martin slipped a ball in behind for Mason and when he shot was parried by the keeper, Johnson was on hand to nod home the rebound.
Pools were playing with a greater tempo now and pushing Doncaster back and when Paul Johnson put pressure on the visiting defence, Mason pounced on the loose ball and curled it home to make it 2-1.
Daniel Johnson struck the bar, Liddle had a shot well saved and then Martin tried a long-range chip which went just wide of the target.
However, Pools did get their reward with a clinching goal late on when the impressive Mason turned on the halfway line, charged in to the box and drilled the ball in to the bottom corner.
