Youth Team Suffer Scunthorpe Defeat
A young Pools Youth Team went down 1-0 in their home game with Scunthorpe United on Saturday afternoon.
A goal just after the hour mark from the visitors was enough to seal the points but Micky Barron remained upbeat at the final whistle.
"I was quite pleased with the performance given the fact we had no Second Years in the side and were up against an older Scunthorpe side."
The first half was an even affair though Pools did create several opportunities to have stolen a foothold in the game.
Lee Mason almost put Barron's men one up just after the quarter hour mark when he latched on to a defensive mistake but his first shot was blocked and his follow-up effort was well saved.
Chay Liddle also came close with a long-range effort but saw the shot go just over the cross bar and the sides went in goalless.
Mason caused a problem again early in the second half when he got in behind the Scunthorpe defence but when he sent the ball across goal it was put behind, and Jordan Mellish saw his effort from the resultant corner saved.
Anthony Wakefield was unlucky not to open the scoring when he had a couple of chances inside the box but both were blocked as they looked set to find the net.
Scunthorpe took the lead from a corner-kick from which they had looked dangerous all game and the goal proved to be vital.
Mason and then Daniel Johnson drew further saves from the visiting keeper before Mason headed a good chance wide in stoppage time as Scunthorpe held on for the win.
