Boo-Boys Made Me Mentally Stronger - Matty

Posted on: Thu 11 Dec 2008

Matty Robson has admitted he's relishing the chance to show what he's capable of now he's been restored to Danny Wilson's starting eleven.

The pacy left-sided player has been in the line-up for each of Pools' last five outings but says there is still room for improvement in his game.

"At the minute I am really enjoying things," he told us.

"It's going as well as it could be apart from the results and the injuries we're suffering but on a personal front it's been fantastic to be back in the side and playing well.

"With every game I feel like I am improving. Along the line there may be a dip but I'm not thinking about that right now, I'm just concentrating on giving my all every time I play."

In a week when Arsenal's Emmanuel Eboue became a high-profile victim of the boo-boys, Robson has admitted he knows what it's like to be a terrace target.

On more than one occasion the 23-year-old has been singled out by sections of the Victoria Park crowd, but after stringing together a series of exciting performances this season it's cheers rather than jeers he can expect to hear at the moment.

"You do hear things from the crowd while you're playing but it's up to you to prove them wrong and show you deserve to be in the side," he explained.

"I wasn't going to let the stick bother me and I think I've managed to battle through it and with my recent performances I've shown what I can do so it's nice to hear the crowd getting behind me.

"It's a great lift to any footballer when the crowd are cheering you, but the other side has been shown this week with Eboue at Arsenal.

"It's obviously not nice to be jeered like that but I think you have to try not to let it affect you and be mentally strong - that's what I've done and it's going ok for me at the moment.

"Now I just want to find that consistency and keep on turning in the right kind of performances to maintain my place in the team."
