Ian Butterworth was pleased with the players' efforts in the game with Newcastle United this afternoon.

Despite the final scoreline, Pools put in an impressive early display, dominating opening proceedings,

"It was a good work out and for forty minutes we did very well," Butterworth told hartlepoolunited.co.uk.

"I thought we played some good stuff and got in their faces a bit but you'd expect their power and pace to show more and it did in the end.

"We gave them the first two goals, they broke very well on us but that's what you get and that's where we couldn't really keep up in the second half.

"It was a pity we couldn't get closer to them at times but they are a Premier League tem and they do things that little bit better and quicker.

"That was some of our lads first ninety minutes of football and like I said, for the first 40 minutes I thought every one of them played very well."

And the Reserve Team Manager admitted that lessons learned during pre season will all be used come August 9th,

"We've got a few things to iron out but that's what pre season is for - we're just working towards the Colchester game now.

"Obviously we're looking at different things at the moment and we're looking to get the right combination in time for that first game.

"We've got four or five games to go before the start of the season and we'll be looking to tighten things up and get the competitive edge ready for the game with Colchester."
