Youngsters Lead Reserves To Victory
Pools Reserves ran out 3-1 winners after an entertaining Pontins Holidays League fixture against Rotherham United at Millmoor.
Two young sides went head-to-head in a game which was played out in a good spirit and produced some excellent attacking football.
Ian Butterworth's men were ahead early on when young Marc Ellison hit a stinging shot which looped off the crossbar before Matty Tymon pounced on the rebound to find the net.
There was a pivotal few minutes on the stroke of half time with Matty Robson putting Pools two up with his second goal in as many games, before Jan Budtz pulled off a remarkable save to protect the two-goal advantage going in to the break.
The Millers came out fighting early in the second half and their pressure paid off when the referee adjudged Joe Tait to have committed a foul inside the box and the hosts reduced the lead from the penalty spot.
However, a well-worked Pools goal finished the affair when excellent approach play by David Foley meant Tymon got in possession in space on the wing. And when he whipped a great cross in to the box, Jonny Rowell popped up at the far post to sidefoot home.
Both sides continued to attack but there were no more goals added and Pools kept pace at the top of the league with another good three points.
