Sheffield Wednesday scored a late goal to condemn Pools Reserves to just their second defeat in six Pontins Holidays League games.

After a slow first half the game burst in to life on the hour mark when Pools allowed young striker Charlie Tunnard space to head home the opening goal.

However, Pools rallied after the setback and were quickly back on the front foot and searching for an equaliser which almost came from the spot when Jonny Rowell was upended only for Owls keeper Rob Burch to palm away Michael Mackay's penalty.

Ian Butterworth's men were not deterred though and were back in the game five minutes later when Mackay atoned for his penalty miss by firing home the equaliser.

It looked set to stay like that until the end but Wednesday defender Liam McMenamin ghosted in at the far post to head home and seal the hosts' win.

Andy Monkhouse got through sixty minutes on his return to action from a knee injury before being replaced by young striker Matty Tymon.
