Pools ran out winners against a Sunderland XI in a pre-season friendly test at the Academy of Light this afternoon.

Tom Haigh scored the only goal of the game in the victory in a solid performance by a Pools side made up of a blend of youth and experience.

It was a game of few chances and Haigh's deflected shot from twenty-five yards just after the hour mark proved decisive.

Sunderland's line-up included Stanislav Varga, Graham Kavanagh, Clive Clarke and Trevor Carson but Pools edged what was a tightly-contested affair.

"It was a solid enough performance in windy conditions," admitted Danny Wilson.

"The lads worked hard and it's always nice to get a victory under your belt."
