Tom Haigh was in high spirits after signing his first professional contract with Pools.

After making his mark with the Youth Team, the midfielder will kick off his fourth season with the Club next term - but this time as a professional.

"I am delighted and really excited for the new season," Haigh told the Official Website.

"I'm looking to prove myself and my ability and show people what I can do."

And, even though he has secured his first contract, he insists there is no way he'll be resting on his laurels,

"It was hard work getting the contract but now I know I'll have to push myself even further to prove myself at this level.

"I signed at Under 15 level so I've been with the Club for three seasons now and I'm just looking forward to the fourth."

Having been with Pools from Under 15s, Haigh has reaped the benefits of playing at a Club with such a strong emphasis on youth,

"I think the Club are very focused on bringing through young players and the whole system is run exceptionally well.

"Young players here know they will always get their chance.

"Paul Stephenson made sure every player got their chance to play right throughout the season and we all got to prove ourselves."

Haigh broke both of his legs in two different incidents during his time with Pools - the latest was a training ground accident last season - and he admits he has had to work hard to keep motivated,

"It was very frustrating for me, especially as I broke both of my legs.

"I was out for quite a long time throughout the three years but I kept plugging away and listened to what the Physios told me."

And now he is enjoying the rewards of his hard work,

"I'm speechless about it all really.

"It does mean more to me because my Dad also used to be a pro player here so he's delighted for me as well.

"He makes sure that I'm keeping up with my fitness work - he's always chasing me out of the house to go running!"
