Nelson's Column: Up For The Cup

Posted on: Thu 22 Jan 2009

Michael Nelson brings us the latest instalment in his online blog.

This week, the big defender looks ahead to Saturday's FA Cup game with West Ham and reveals which member of the coaching team ended up face down in the mud this week.

Beating Northampton Town...

After getting beat down at Oldham and having a few injuries, it was good to bounce back with a good result last Friday night against Northampton Town.

We got two nice goals from Joel and managed to keep a clean sheet as well so it was a good result for us.

It would have been a long time until our next League game if we had lost to Northampton so it was important to get the three points and it eased the pressure a little bit coming into the Cup game.

Pools Live On TV...

When the draw came out, a few of the lads were looking at all the fixtures and we thought we had a chance of getting the game televised and a couple of weeks later, it was confirmed that we were going to be.

It puts a bit of a spotlight on the Club which can only be a good thing and it will also generate some cash. Hopefully we'll win the tie and get through and keep ourselves in the spotlight and bring in some more cash for the Club.

You don't really get as much media coverage playing league football week in week out so it is nice to do well in the competition and get a bit of recognition for it.

Can We Win It?...

Yes, definitely.

Especially after beating two Premier League sides already. Even after beating West Brom earlier in the season, no one gave us a chance against Stoke City. The West Brom game wasn't really mentioned ahead of the Stoke game and it was like we were just making up the numbers.

Stoke City then came to The Vic and they were quite surprised by what they found and hopefully it will be the same for West Ham.

Checking Out The Opposition...

We had the Oldham game called off a couple of Saturday's ago so once we got back, myself, Ritchie Humphreys and Ben Clark decided to go and watch West Ham playing at Newcastle.

Craig Bellamy and Scott Parker were the best two players in the pitch that day but we know that Carlton Cole is in a rich vein of form at the minute - hopefully that will come to an end on Saturday.

FA Cup Haircut...

I know a few of the lads have booked themselves in for their FA Cup trim this week with us being on the TV.

This will be the first time I've had to go and get my hair cut by someone else ahead of a game - I could just do it myself when I used to shave it off.

In The Mud...

Ian Butterworth got snipered on Monday in training. We were doing work on defending and he was getting involved in it all from the sidelines and next thing we knew. He was rolling round in the mud.

That definitely gave all the lads something to laugh at.
