Pools climbed out of the bottom four after a classy performance clinched three crucial points at Leyton Orient this afternoon.

Gary Liddle celebrated his return to the side after a hip injury by scoring twice either side of Roy O'Donovan's fourth goal for the Club as Pools stormed in to a 3-0 lead by the break.

A tense opening period almost went against Pools but the Orient skipper Tamika Mkandawire was denied twice by a brilliant double block by Scott Flinders.

And Pools took advantage of the let-off to snatch the lead when Ritchie Humphreys wonderful right-wing corner found Liddle in space and he sent a header in to the bottom corner.

Orient looked stunned and struggled to regain their composure quickly enough and Pools - served well by the hard work of O'Donovan and Armann Bjornsson in attack - made in roads against their hosts.

Jason Demetriou loitered too long in possession on the edge of his own box and Monkhouse picked his pocket, skated to the byline and rolled it back for O'Donovan to slam home from close range.

And with half time approaching, Pools effectively ended the game as a contest when the Orient defence allowed Liddle to get clear at the front post and glance Joe Gamble's left-wing corner in to the far corner of the net.

Orient boss Geraint Williams will have been expecting a response from his side after the break, but Pools continued to make the main running.

Monkhouse went close to making it 4-0 when his long range effort was well tipped over the bar by the retreating keeper Jamie Jones.

O'Donovan also came close after jinking in to space in the area but Mkandawire blocked, while at the other end Sam Collins was in the right place to prevent half time substitute Jonathan Tehoue with a terrific block.

Adrian Patulea added a bit more punch to the Orient attack when he was introduced just after the hour mark but he saw a volley flash over the bar from the edge of the area.

However, Pools weren't so lucky as time ticked away when the defence struggled to deal with a long ball in to the box and Patulea forced the ball home past Flinders.

In the end Pools comfortably saw the game out though and the win was enough to move them out of the danger zone ahead of Monday's meeting with Brighton.
