Pools picked up their first home point of the new season as sub Adam Boyd scored late in the game to pull level after Stuart Beavon had opened the scoring in the 50th minute.

Chris Turner's men had dominated the opening half, creating numerous chances and the Wycombe goal came largely against the run of play. In the end though, Pools had to settle for one point in the face of dogged opposition from the visitors.

Pools had just one thing in mind this afternoon - to record their first home victory of this new campaign.

And Antony Sweeney almost gave Turner's men the perfect start when good work between James Brown and Steve Haslam set the midfielder up inside the box but his poked effort was held by Scott Shearer in the Wycombe goal.

Andy Monkhouse sent a ball over the top that set Denis Behan running down to the byline - the Irish striker put the ball back into the area for Brown but his volleyed effort rose just over the bar.

While Pools dominated possession in this opening half, making sure the Wycombe back four were by far the busier, the visitors did enjoy the occasional foray into the final third.

Stuart Green picked up the ball on the edge of the area before sliding a ball at goal but his effort scraped wide of Scott Flinders' left hand post.

Flinders came to the rescue later in the half when he showed great bravery to thrown himself at the feet of the in-running Jon-Paul Pittman to snatch the ball away from the former Pools' loan man's feet.

At the other end, Pools continued to cause problems for the visiting defence - this time it was Leon McSweeney at the centre of the action as he burst forward from deep inside his own half to lay the ball on for Monkhouse who fired in from distance but his effort went high off target.

Brown, who was giving the Wanderers' defenders the real runaround in this opening half, tried his luck again from just outside the box  - turning into space before poking an effort goalwards only to be denied by Shearer once again.

McSweeney smashed an effort at goal after good work by Sweeney, which rose over the bar while Denis Behan pulled an important save out of Shearer with one of his trademark freekicks - this time testing the keeper with a rocket from the left side of the area.

For all their possession and chances on goal though, Pools went into the break level but there was plenty to work on in the second half for Turner's men.

With just 50 minutes on the clock though,the Director of Sport's instructions would have to be changed as Stuart Beavon broke forward with relative ease to slot home from just outside of the area and into Flinders' bottom left corner of the net.  

The goal came much against the run of play and the frustrations of the home supporters wereonce again audible as Pools looked for a leveller.

And that equaliser looked on the cards when a long ball into the box from Steve Haslam on the right was headed back into the action by James Brown at the far post and when Ritchie Jones arrived to push it at goal, he was denied by a great block by Shearer.

Chris Turner rang the changes on the hour mark as the front two of Brown and Behan were replaced by Armann Bjornsson and Adam Boyd - the pairing who had fared so well for the Reserves in midweek.

There was a break in play when Peter Hartley suffered an injury and had to be replaced by Neil Austin - but this allowed Pools to regroup as Wycombe had been enjoying a strong spell of pressure.

With 79 minutes on the clock, the equaliser arrived for Pools and it was sub Adam Boyd who hit home.

Neil Austin, who looked bright after his introduction, whipped in a freekick from midway inside the Wycombe half which was pushed on into the path of Boyd who did well to turn and fire low past Shearer to draw the game level.

A Monkhouse run down the left wing saw the ball played in across the face of goal but with no-one there to poke home, the opportunity was missed as Pools desperately pushed for a winner.

There was a great opportunity for Boyd to snatch a winner late in the game but the striker mis-placed his ball after a good cross from Haslam and again a good chance went missing.

Despite the five additional minutes of play, Pools were unable to make their late pressure count and had to settle for a share of the spoils with a dogged Wycombe outfit this afternoon.
