A goal in either half saw Pools and Yeovil Town play out a 1-1 draw at The Vic in extremely cold conditions this afternoon.

Chris Turner's men fought back into the game after going a goal behind in the first half - Andy Monkhouse grabbing the equaliser to secure a point.

With the pitch passing a late pitch inspection, conditions inside the ground this afternoon were extremely cold, with signs of the snow and ice still visible on the pitch.

And there was little to warm the home fans inside The Vic in the first half, with few real chances for either team.

Ritchie Humphreys was the first player to try his luck on goal when he fired in low from distance but his effort went just wide of target.

Although Pools enjoyed their fair share of possession in this first half, there was little to really trouble Alex McCarthy in the visiting goal as the Yeovil defence shut the door firmly on Turner's men at every attempt.

Gary Liddle got in a great interception to whip the ball out of the path of Dean Bowditch as he was homing in on goal.

Yeovil Town looked dangerous going forward and Pools had to be alert with every break forward; Liddle put in several crucial challenges to deny the visitors while Scott Flinders had to be on alert.

With 33 minutes on the clock though, Pools were behind as Yeovil forced an opener in controversial circumstances.

With there looking to have been two clear handballs in the build-up, the referee ignored all appeals as Sam Williams was allowed to pick up possession inside the box, turn and fire a low effort past Flinders and into the back of the net.

Despite continued appeals from Pools, the official showed no interest and the goal stood - Turner's men once again were left with a mountain to climb.

As the half time whistle approached, Pools upped their pressure on the visitors - Antony Sweeney, heavily involved at right back this afternoon, whipped a good ball in from the right wing but despite Stefan Stam looking to have controlled with his hand, once again the referee waved play on and play continued.

Humphreys then sent a teasing ball in from the right wing across to the far post where Armann Bjornsson rose head down for the arriving Ritchie Jones but the midfielder was just beaten to the ball and the danger passed.

The half time whistle arrived at the wrong time for Pools just as they looked to take a real hold on the game but the break did give Chris Turner the chance to gear his side up.

And, aside from an early effort from Shaun MacDonald which was brilliantly saved by Flinders, the early period of the second half belonged to Pools.

Alex McCarthy made a series of crucial saves to keep Pools at bay as Turner's men came out looking confident and determined.

Adam Boyd showed a great turn to get into space before sending an effort goalwards from the edge of the box only to be denied by the Glovers stopper.

There was another appeal for handball inside the box when JP Kalala looked to meet a Pools corner kick with a hand but there was to be nothing from the official this afternoon as play continued.

Gary Liddle continued his dominance at the back to slide in a snatch possession away from Gavin Tomlin inside the box with a great challenge as Pools worked hard to get back into the game.

Adam Boyd tested McCarthy again with a looping effort from distance but the keeper came out on top again as he rose to tip the effort over the bar.

A long throw from Sam Collins caused problems inside the box for the visitors as Bjornsson rose well to flick the ball on for Boyd who fired at goal - McCarthy got down to hold the effort only to be challenged by Monkhouse who was booked for his efforts. This was the winger's fifth card of the campaign and he will now miss the game at Leeds United on Boxing Day.

The equaliser arrived in the 68th minute, turning Monkhouse from villain to hero once again; a good ball forward from the busy Sweeney found Adam Boyd running into the area from the right - he sent a pacy ball across the face of goal where Monkhouse popped up at the far post to force over the line under pressure from the defender.

As the snow again began to fall inside The Vic, Pools came desperately close to grabbing a winner; a freekick was played forward quickly to Boyd on the right and the striker again got space to send a dangerous ball across goal where McCarthy emerged from a crowd holding the ball when a goal looked a certainty.

Ritchie Jones, switched out right when McSweeney went off, did well to burst down the wing, leaving his marker for dead as he whipped a hopeful ball into the box for Bjornsson to head back across goal where it eventually came to Monkhouse whose effort went high over the bar.

Despite the pressure, Pools could not find the winner this afternoon and the game finished all square - a disappointing result for Turner's men but good spirit shown to get back into the game to take a share of the spoils.
