Pools put in a solid display to run out comfortable 2-0 winners against Yeovil Town at The Vic.

Goals from Jams Brown and Joel Porter were enough for Wilson's men to take all three points from the game.

With Pools' performances this season having been somewhat unpredictable so far, after the disappointment of the display at Crewe Alexandra, there was every possibility that The Vic was in for a better game today.

And so it was more the Dr Jekyll side of Pools who turned up this afternoon as they put in an entertaining and solid first-half display in which they could well have had more than the one-goal advantage that they did at half time.

But with just sixteen minutes on the clock, Danny Wilson had been forced into making two changes to his chosen starting eleven.

Pools did start very brightly, with Richard Barker and Joel Porter looking lively up front and Andy Monkhouse and Antony Sweeney working hard to create openings on the flanks.

The first shot of the afternoon came after just four minutes of play and it was Pools' Aussie striker who was first to test Scott Flinders in the visiting goal.

Good pressure from barker saw the ball pushed through into the area for Porter but his effort edged just over the bar on this occasion,

Porter combined again well with Antony Sweeney on the right wing before seeing his final shot deflected wide and then Porter struck the post with another really well-taken effort. His shot deflected out to Monkhouse whose effort went up into the air to allow Barker to try an impressive overhead kick, which went just over the bar.

A great ball out of defence by Sam Collins freed Barker to power in to the final third before putting a perfectly-weighted cross over for Porter whose chipped effort was just reached by Flinders.

And that was the last of the action for Collins as he limped off the field in the 12th minute with an apparent rib injury picked up in an earlier challenge - Michael Nelson, dropped out of the starting eleven in place of Ben Clark took Collins' place.

Just four minutes later and Wilson was making his second enforced change - Richard Barker back in the side after missing out with a knee injury in recent weeks, pulled up with a hamstring problem in a challenge on the edge of the area and, despite trying to continue, the big striker had to concede defeat and was replaced by James Brown.

Despite the changes though, pools maintained their tempo and continued to press Flinders' goal. Brown had his first chance within minutes of his introduction when he latched on to a Gary Liddle ball into the area but his headed effort was held by the visiting keeper.

Pools did take a deserved lead in the 28th minute when Andy Monkhouse took a quick throw-in to release Joel Porter - the striker did brilliantly to turn his man to run into the box before squaring the ball for James brown who took one touch before slotting home low past Flinders.

Arran Lee-Barrett at the other end, had very little to do in the first half but when he was called into action, he made no mistake. A ball into the box from Stephen Maher from the left wing found Marcus Stewart at the far post but the Pools' stopper got down well to tip his effort round the post.

In the closing minutes of the first half, referee Mr Boyeson stamped his mark on the game with two contentious decisions. His first came when Terrell Forbes seemed to play the ball back into the arms of his keeper but despite the appeals of the Pools' players, the official waved away appeals for the back pass.

And then when the lively Jamie McCunnie put the ball into the area for Brown, the striker saw his effort blocked by Flinders but when Terry Skiverton looked to handle the rebound, once again Mr Boyeson ignored all appeals.

Despite leaving the field for the interval in swirling snow, the players returned for the second half to bright sunshine such was the bizarre weather here at The Vic this afternoon.

The visitors did look a little brighter after the break and enjoyed a greater share of the possession, but it was Pools who looked most likely to add to the goal tally.

Joel Porter whipped in a fierce ball from the left wing which pulled a full-stretch save from Flinders while Antony Sweeney fired over from close range.

At the opposite end, Marcus Stewart put a ball into the box from the right which found Andy Kirk in the area but, with good pressure from Ben Clark, Lee-Barrett was able to collect.

But Pools were intent on taking the points this afternoon and Joel Porter got his just reward for another top performance.

More quick thinking from Andy Monkhouse saw the winger poke a good ball past two Town defenders to free Ritchie Humphreys to run through in from the left. His pacy ball into the box caused problems before finding it's way to Joel Porter in the centre of the box and his powerful side-footed effort sailed past the Yeovil stopper and into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

James Brown, who was making up for lost time, could well have added his second of the afternoon only to be denied by a great double save by Flinders while Antony Sweeney saw his blast cleared off the line.

Marvin Williams smashed an effort against the post in the dying minutes as Yeovil Town looked to get a late consolation but the visitors could fine no way through as Pools ran out 2-0 winners - their first ever victory over The Glovers.

Next up is the visit of League leaders Swansea City to The Vic and Danny Wilson will be hoping for another solid display from his side.
