Pools took all three points from their visit to London Road

Pools picked up all three points in an entertaining high-scoring clash at London Road this afternoon.

Wilson's men took a deserved 3-0 first-half lead, were then pegged back to 4-3 before finishing the game at 5-3 in what turned out to be a nervous but enjoyable afternoon for Pools' fans.

It was a very bright start to the game as both teams pressed forward in search of a crucial opener and this led to an entertaining opening half.

And the atmosphere throughout the entire first period was created almost entirely by the travelling army of Pools fans who did everything they could to spur their team onto victory.

And Wilson's men did their bit to keep the fans going; while the midfield worked hard to push forward with Joel Porter and Jon Daly looking to create openings in the final third. And the defence had their job to do as they battled to cope with the aerial threat of Trevor Benjamin and Liam Davis.

But it was a more confident-looking Pools side who took the game to Peterborough United and, although there were a few early chances for the hosts, Wilson's side saw their hard work pay off on the half hour mark.

Pools first had the ball in the back of the net with less than ten minutes on the clock but Joel Porter was harshly adjudged to have been offside as he slotted the ball past Mark Tyler.

The home side tested Dimi Konstantopoulos on a couple of occasions; a left-footed drive from Davis from just inside the area was saved well by the big keeper and then Dimi showed he too was on form when he reacted brilliantly to block an effort from Benjamin that looked set to sneak inside the near post.

But then Pools took hold of things - when Jon Daly was brought down just outside the area, Gary Liddle confidently stepped up to drive a right-footed free kick through a crowded area. Although the ball did take a slight ricochet on its way through, it just sneaked inside the left hand corner to give Pools the opener and Liddle his first goal for Pools.

And then, straight from the kick off Pools found themselves back on the attack. The ball was played through to Porter inside the area and, with the striker about to twist round Mark Arber, the Posh player fell to ground grabbing the ball with his hand as he did.

Referee Phil Crossley pointed straight to the spot and, although Matty Robson looked keen to take the kick, Jon Daly indicated his intention to take the penalty. And the big striker showed great confidence to hit a side-footed effort into the bottom right corner of the net.

Although Tyler dived the right way, Daly's kick was precise and the keeper was left with no chance as it hit the back of the net to make it 2-0 to Pools, with two goals in as many minutes.

And, with half time approaching and three minutes of additional time signalled, Pools really did give the hosts a mountain to climb as they made it 3-0.

A good ball forward from Nelson bounced to Gibb on the right. He cushioned it through for Liddle who in turn found Porter running through on goal. The Aussie striker moved into the area, turned his man before back-heeling the ball through to the in-running Daly and the big striker made no mistake as he smashed a great effort into the top right corner.

So Wilson's men went into the second half with a three-goal advantage and the backing of an extremely vociferous away following of 376 Poolies and the players certainly gave those fans more to cheer in the second half.

The hosts were awarded a penalty just after the fifty-minute mark when Darren Williams was adjudged to have pushed Benjamin inside the area but, as a clear sign that things were going Pools way at London Road this afternoon, the big striker smashed his spot kick high over the bar and into the roof of the stand as the score remained 3-0.

But that wasn't for very long. After grabbing his first goal for the Club in the first half, Gary Liddle clearly found a taste for scoring as he latched onto a smart through-ball from Porter and poked the ball through the legs of Tyler to make it 4-0.

But while things should then have been plain-sailing for Wilson's men, the hosts then found a new determination as they stepped things up and gave Pools a bit of a scare.

After a slight scrap inside the area, the ball was poked through for Richard Butcher and he turned to slip a neat shot in between Konstantopoulos and his left post to make it 4-1 with 59 minutes on the clock.

Two minutes later and things were even tighter for Pools; a left-footed lobbed effort from Peter Gain caught Dimi off-guard as it just dipped over him and into the back of the net, making it 4-2.

Now, with the home crowd having found their voice Peterborough really did throw everything at Pools and Wilson's men were made to play very deep as they looked to hold onto their dwindling lead.

And then things got a bit too close for comfort - when Danny Crow's goal-bound effort smashed against Benjamin, the big striker turned and hit it past Dimi and into the back of the net. Fortunately for Pools, the effort was ruled out for offside.

But the relief didn't last long at all for Wilson's men and the home side poured forward again just one minute later and, when skipper Dean Holden hit an impressive 25-yard drive into Konstantopoulos' top left corner to make it 4-3, things turned unbearably tense inside London Road.

The hosts had appeals for a penalty rejected when Gain lifted the ball onto the hand of John Brackstone but the referee waved play on as Pools hung to their lead.

David Foley had the ball in the back of the net as the minutes ticked away but the youngster's strike was ruled out for offside - the third effort of the game to receive that fate.

And then Pools made sure and put some nerves at ease - Foley, who again looked lively after his introduction into the game made a good run down the right before playing a long ball across the face of goal. Daly collected the effort and played it inside the area for the in-running Robson and the midfielder made no mistake as he hit a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner to make it 5-3.

Despite the nervous second period, Pools really did deserve the win against Peterborough United this afternoon as they played some really entertaining and flowing football.
