Pools v Peterborough United
Darryl Duffy's last minute goal gave Pools the points

A last-minute goal from loan-man Darryl Duffy was enough to seal another three points and confirm Pools' longest ever consecutive winning streak in the League. While seven wins had been achieved on three separate occasions, Pools are now in record-breaking territory.

It was an entertaining first half here at The Vic this afternoon as Peterborough looked the brightest of recent opposition.

That is not to say Danny Wilson's men were second best - quite the opposite in fact as Pools looked a confident and very self-assured outfit at both ends of the field.

Gary Liddle (HUFC)

With Gary Liddle slotting comfortably into the centre of defence in place of the injured Michael Nelson and James Brown partnering Darryl Duffy in a very lively front line, Wilson's men were by far the stronger of the teams and had several chances to open the scoring in the first forty-five.

With the game goalless after eight minutes of play, a countdown in the Town End signalled the fact that Pools had gone ten hours without conceding a goal, a feat that was not lost on The Vic faithful as fans in each stand burst into rapturous applause to congratulate the players.

Ritchie Humphreys tries a blast from distance as Pools look for the opener

The visitors were quick on the break and created some good early chances - Danny Crow testing Dimitrios Konstantopoulos with a powerful low drive from the left but the big keeper held the effort well. Aaron McLean was next to draw the Pools keeper into action when he ran through on goal but Dimi came off his line to throw himself into the challenge with the striker - McLean leaving with a yellow card for his part and the keeper collecting the ball.

Pools' chances came from a number of sources; Antony Sweeney was fed through by the dominant Willie Boland but with only Paul Rachubka to beat, the midfielder saw his side-footed effort blocked out just wide of the near post.

Darryl Duffy, who was again a threat for Pools throughout the game, had a few chances himself to open the scoring. The on-loan striker hit a teasing effort from 25-yards which rose just over the bar and later showed great determination to battle against two visiting defenders inside the area before picking up the loose ball out of the challenge. Despite his dogged play though, Duffy saw his shot at goal deflected just wide of the far post.

With chances for Boland, James Brown and Ritchie Humphreys all keeping the visiting defence on their toes, Paul Rachubka was a busy man in the opening half.

With Pools playing some good passing football and looking the more likely to score, they continued their dominance into the second period and really threw everything at the visiting goal.

James Brown (HUFC)
James Brown was lively for Pools against Peterborough

The lively Duffy showed great pace and ability as he burst forward into the final third, skipping easily past his marker to fire a great strike at goal - unfortunately he didn't get the just reward for his efforts as the ball went just wide of the par post.

Duffy's striker partner James Brown also enjoyed some positive possession in the game, showing flashes of his trademark trickery and had a couple of chances in the second half to open the scoring - only losing out to the solid Rachubka.

And Brown almost set up the opening goal with his last touch of the game as he whipped the ball into the area where Andy Monkhouse rose to head goal bound but his powerful flick edged agonisingly wide of the post.

Pools were on top throughout the second period and really did deserve a goal for their efforts as even skipper Micky Barron tested Rachubka with a blast from distance.

Danny Wilson's side dominated throughout and were worthy winners

As the minutes ticked away, Wilson's men pushed on further and Sweeney fired in a shot from distance which went narrowly wide of the far post. David Foley tried his luck from distance but his effort dipped just over the bar.

And then, right on the ninety minute mark, it came - the deserved winning goal that saw Pools make it eight winning games in succession.

A great run by sub Foley saw the young striker burst forward into the box and, although his shot was deflected up in the air by the knees of Rachubka, Darryl Duffy arrived on cue to force the looping ball over the line, sending Victoria Park into raptures.

With Pools having not conceded a goal in eight games (11 hours, 22 minutes to be precise) and on the back of their current record-breaking winning run, Wilson's men will go into the New Year's Day game at Mansfield brimming with confidence.
