I was completely shocked to hear of the sad and tragic loss of Michael. Deepest sympathy to all in the North-East from the South-West. Bill Shankley once famously said that football was not a matter of life and death - it was more important than that. We all know the great Shanks was joking, of course. Nothing is more important or precious than life itself. God bless.

Are wonderful things,
They last till the longest day,
They never wear out,
They never get lost,
And can never be given away.
To some you may be forgotten,
To others a part of the past.

Your memory will always last.

The Trueman Family, March Camb's
Poem for Michael
All through the week-end of your leaving,
the sun glared, floodlighting grief.
And everything faded in the thinking
of your twenty too-brief years.
Church bells mourned
and they were for you. Tides sighed softly
in your memory. In the evening
we sat with dimmed lights,
reflecting on your youth
and promise.
Yet unstoppably, in the mind's eye,
your image will still burst through mid-field,
jinking across the Vic.
Out-skipping visiting defenders,
making nothing of distances;
wearing your deserved colours
with love and pride.
Diane
To the family of Michael Maidens. There are no words to describe the shock and sadness we have all felt this week and our thoughts have been with you all.I hope some comfort can be gained from reading the many messages left for Michael and that you can take pride in knowing how well liked and respected he was on and off the pitch by everybody connected to HUFC. Thanks for the memories Michael.

A massive shock and such a tragic loss. My thoughts and deepest sympathy are with all of his family and friends. A player that had a huge personality and a great enthusiasm for the game, an exceptional and gifted individual that had a whole life ahead of him. Michael Maidens (1987-2007), Gone but not forgotten. Rest In Peace Michael.
Chris Marshall (Rio)
It was my pleasure to give Michael Maidens the Sunday Sun star man rating on his loan debut for Blyth Spartans on the opening day of the Blue Square North season back in August. He scored the second goal in a 2-0 win over Alfreton Town and was head and shoulders above everyone else on that day. My reports on the game were led by Michael's eye catching performance and I know everyone at Blyth Spartans has been affected by his sad loss. I'll be back at Croft Park on Saturday to cover their game against Leigh RMI where a fitting tribute will be made before the game. RIP Michael and thanks for the memories.
Jeff Bowron - Sports Journalist (Gateshead)

What a sad loss of your Michael. Sincerest condolences from a Brighton fan. I know that I - and other travelling 'Seagulls' - who will be at Victoria Park this coming Saturday - will genuinely share in your tribute and respects - that we understand will take place before the game. We are reminded of the loss - in tragically similar circumstances - of - the then - 21 year old - Brighton star 'of great potential' - Barrie Rees. Writing in "Seagulls - the History of Brighton and Hove Albion" - Tim Carder and Roger Harris write - "The whole town was shocked by the tragedy ... it was one of the saddest days in Albion's history." Barrie departed this life more than 42 years ago - on 27 March 1965 - and of course - he is still remembered today - as I am sure your Michael will be - by 'Pools' fans - for so many years to come - and more, Rest in Peace Michael.
With respects. Chris Jolliffe
We were shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Michael. Being so young you didn't play for us for very long, but you've certainly left your mark in more ways than one. Who can forget 'that' goal you scored? Without doubt a credit to your family, club and friends. It's such a pity your full potential won't be recognised. We hope your family can take some comfort in knowing you were so highly regarded for a young man. They always take the good ones from us. Rest in Peace Michael. Let each game this season be dedicated to you.
Dave Hooks and family
R.I.P Mick, what a great lad to have in the changing rooms and to have in your team on the pitch. Maidz was always a winner and always will be. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Michael's Family. We only had the pleasure of his company for a week, but he made a lasting impression on us. He really seemed to enjoy the game of soccer and looked to have a bright future. He brought honor both to his family and his team by his conduct here in Texas. I am sure he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. We had the chance to celebrate their Dallas Cup championship and will always remember him as a champion.

Surely a player of the future for Hartlepool United. A very good attitude displayed on the pitch throughout as well as a terrific right foot. A pleasure to see such a young player wear the blue and white and represent the town. Michael was an example to all young players that with commitment and dedication it is possible to break into the 1st team and show your ability at a good level. Thank you for all your efforts Michael.
Philip McLaughlin
Whilst I never had the pleasure of seeing Michael play personally, I know many who have and all say what a fantastic player he was developing into. On a footballing front he will obviously be remembered for the wonder strike against Huddersfield. What I see when I watch that goal is the way the rest of the team all go and congratulate Michael personally, not just for the quality of strike, but they are all genuinely pleased for him. He was obviously very well liked amongst all of his team mates. Thoughts are of course with Michael's family, friends and all those connected with Hartlepool United Football Club. RIP.

Swindon Fan here. We have had our games over the past few years now and your place is one Ground I always enjoy coming to. Real football fans and "Gods" Country.
Just got back from my two weekly pilgrimage to The County Ground to hear the death of young Michael. My sincere best wishes go to you all, the friends, family, the Poolies (the ones I enjoy the banter with on my right at your place !!). I see the blue and white stripes kicking down into the away end with a young future star shining in a light.......young Michael. The games and seasons come and go. The ups and downs following a lower league Club, but the players come and go and sometimes sadly are taken away.

My condolences first and foremost to this talented young mans family and friends and also to all connected with Hartlepool United. It seems so tragic that millions of young men each year try to aspire to play at this level of football yet only a very fortunate few have the talent to make it and then something like this occurs. It puts our day to day petty problems in perspective.

Mike Maidens - I'll always remember you with that big beaming smile on your face. You were one of the nicest guys I have ever met; its true that the good ones get taken first. You will be missed so much. Whenever I feel down I'll just think of that phrase you always said, "Chin up love!" I'll see you soon Mike, look after us all down here!
All my love, Danielle Ashburner xxxx
Just a few words of condolence to the family, friends, and supporters of Hartlepool United F.C. Having just suffered the same scenario a few weeks ago as yourselves, we QPR fans know exactly how you are feeling and all we can say to you is to remember the GOOD things Michael has achieved for you, perhaps your club can follow the tributes, our club arranged for Ray Jones ( All players wear the squad number that Michael wore for the club). Maybe QPR could organise a benefit match between yourselves and us to commemorate the lives of the two young players, with ALL proceeds going to the bereaved families or to their chosen charities, hopefully you can contact QPR and enquire about this, as I am sure the many thousands of fans of both clubs would dig deep into their pockets, anyway enough said, good luck to the future Hartlepool United.
Denis Stevenson, Friends of QPR.
Deepest sympathy to all of Michael's family and friends. RIP Michael

Every Hartlepool fan is devastated by this news, but we can only imagine what his family, girlfriend, friends and teammates are feeling. I offer my thoughts and condolences to them in this extremely difficult time and wish them all the very best. It's a very sad tragedy and one that will stay in peoples' hearts and minds for a long time, but his death should not overshadow what he has achieved. Through hard work and commitment he made a living doing something he loved and that is an achievement most elders never achieve in life. The shrine outside the ground, the tributes from fans, managers and players and all the messages of condolences will be testament to his character. His memory will be ever lasting, enjoy yourself upstairs Michael.

Our thoughts go out to Michael's family, friends and all at HUFC at this sad time for us all. This outpouring of grief for one so young brings a tear or two as we all try to come to terms with such a tragedy. Remember true POOLY'S never die they are FOREVER.

I had no idea what had happened on Friday until my brother told me that he had heard that the game had been called off. I checked on the Swansea City website, and found out why. What an awful thing to happen. I had been thinking about the Hartlepool fans all morning. The long journey down to South Wales. It's a journey that we've made in the opposite direction many times in the past. It's very sad to lose a family member or friend in such a tragic way. To lose a young player with such a bright future not only touches the club and its fans, but the whole region. And all who follow football. May I extend my deepest sympathy to his family and friends, and all who knew Michael. And the fans of Hartlepool United.May he rest in peace.
Adrian Jones, Swansea City fan.
Our heartfelt sympathy goes to Michael's family and friends, team mates and everybody at Hartlepool United. Rest in Peace Michael and may the family find the strength to cope with their tragic loss.

Our sympathies for the tragic loss of such a young man. Our own son is in the youth side at Swansea City and we appreciate the loss that must be felt at your club. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and team mates. The very least we could do at Swansea is postpone as a mark of respect. RIP MICHAEL MAIDENS
The Cornell family
Best wishes to Michael Maidens' family, this sad passing puts everything in perspective, a promising young monkey hanger by the looks of it, every time I've visited Hartlepool with the Swans we are always made very welcome and I was very saddened by the tragic news, it hit home when I saw Jeff Stelling reporting the games postponement on Sky Sports News he seemed very sad at the event. I echo the one minute applause tribute I was at the recent Walsall match in which a youngster of thiers passed away and its a huge fitting tribute. I along with every Swans fans' thoughts are with Michael's family and friends and all staff and players of the young star, sorry for your great loss and I'm sure Michael will be with you every time Pools play.
Love from David Eaton Swansea City supporter

We have lost a major talent in the passing of Michael. The Hartlepool fans will never forget his goal against Huddersfield, a piece of sublime skill from a player who was loved by his own. I think the one thing that sums up how much Michael meant to his fellow players is demonstrated in the celebrations after he scores, every single player comes to congratulate him. RIP
