Behan's Blog: I'll Shoot From Anywhere!

Posted on: Mon 07 Sep 2009

New to the Official Website this season is Behan's Blog, in which Denis Behan will keep us updated on all things Pools both on and off the pitch.

The Irishman has made a big impact since arriving from Cork City during the summer and we're delighted to have him signed up for a regular column here on the site.

Hello and welcome to my first piece here on the Official Website. I'll hope to get something up here every fortnight or so, hopefully you'll enjoy the read.

I think the move here to Hartlepool is going well so far. It's been a huge difference since I came here at first. Obviously nobody knew me but I think they know me by now! Every one of the lads are great; they're good craic and there are no Charlies here - or none that I know of yet anyway! Unless you look at Lidds' car, the X6…

I haven't found the transition that hard. Maybe that's because I'm in the middle of my season already and the game isn't as quick as I thought it would be. Having said that, I thought our last game against Bristol was a pacey first half, you know. We should have won, but that's another story!

I think the fans are liking the kind of player I am and the way I play if I do it properly. I work hard and I do the nasty stuff which a lot of players don't like doing. I've no problem in doing it and anything that comes on top of that is a bonus.

If I'm being honest, I didn't think it was going to go as well for me as it is at the moment but the fans have been really good. Anyone I've met in the street they stop and have a talk with me - not boring the ear off me or anything, just asking how I'm doing and how I'm settling in! It's good to have the fans on your side rather than against you put it that way!

I think people have seen I have a shot on me so I try and use that whenever I can. Anywhere in my own half is a bit too far, but other than that it's all game for a shot! Back in Cork I was playing as the only front man and I never got a chance to use it. But then with about three or four games left before I moved here we went two up front again and I was able to use it because the other striker can lay it off. I could hit it and I scored a few goals like that back home. I'm getting the opportunities here and maybe only one out of five will go again but over the course of a game I think you'll take that.

I'm looking forward to the game this weekend. I just think we're going to put in a solid performance on Saturday. We ironed out a lot of things in the dressing room after the game on Tuesday. We broke it down to the bare bones of what we need to do. We know we're still learning each other's games and a few players are still out injured like Humphs and Ben but we know where we want to go is the best way of saying it I think. We know we won't get there in one minute but I think we've certainly got the basis of a good team. Browny's coming back now, Boydy's getting sharper and there is good competition for places.

We know we have to do better defensively and we know that we have to take the chances that come our way. The chances from the other night which hit the cross bar and the post are going to happen, and hopefully over the course of the season will even themselves out. Having said that, I think I must have had an episode with a nun for those two not to go in!

This week we'll go back to basics again. We did so well in our opening games and we're going to give it a right go down at Gillingham. I think we just need our first win and I'll stick my neck out and say we're going to get it at Gillingham.

Denis.
