Ian McGuckin will lead a largely youthful Pools line-up against The Mariners, who currently lie second in the EBAC Northern League Division One table.
Nicky Deverdics and Jordan Richards are the most senior players in the Pools’ starting eleven, while Jake Orrell and Devante Rodney will also start at Mariners Park.
Former Pools stars David Foley and Darren Holden are among those on the books at South Shields, while ex Pools boss Martin Scott is Assistant Manager to Graham Fenton.
Former Sunderland star Julio Arca scored from 40 yards as Shields were also boosted by an impressive away win at Team Solent at the weekend to make the quarter-finals of the FA Vase.
“It’s going to be a good test for the lads,” McGuckin told us.
“South Shields had a difficult and important away game on Saturday but got a brilliant result so we will have to wait and see how they view the fixture with us tonight.
“If they are at full strength then it will be a very competitive game and a totally different test to the one we had against Rotherham last week.
“Shields will offer a more physical threat and they have some good, experienced players so it will be great to see how our young lads cope in the face of that different kind of challenge.
“It’s all part of the learning process for our younger players and games like this are an important part of their development so we’re looking forward to it.”
Pools have an extra incentive to continue their involvement in the Durham County Challenge Cup, given that the Final is set to be played at The Northern Gas and Power Stadium.
Admission prices at Mariners Park at £6 for adults and £4 for concessions.
