Dave Jones admitted that his side paid the penalty for a poor first fifteen minutes against Luton Town but insisted he was happy with the rest of their performance at Kenilworth Road.

Sloppy defending saw the hosts score twice inside the opening quarter-hour to take a strangle hold on Tuesday evening’s encounter, though Pools did look a better side after the break.

However, despite some pressure on The Hatters goal, it was the home side who had the last laugh when they broke to add a third goal near the end and seal the three points.

“We just couldn’t buy a goal when we had the pressure,” Jones told Pools PlayerHD.

“I couldn’t them fault them after the first fifteen minutes – they regrouped well and we just needed a bit of luck in front of goal, a bit like they got with the ricochet for the third.

“I thought we worked hard, dug in deep and we had a lot of young kids out there learning their trade so it’s hard but a team in fourth playing a team where we are, I couldn’t fault them to be fair.

“It’s hard to have a go apart from about the first fifteen minutes; we were solid, we knocked it about well and had them chasing – we just needed that final ball.

“I don’t think there deserved to be three goals between the sides; if we had got one back it would have given us a lift but the last goal they scored should have been cleared.

“It’s hard just now and that was a harsh lesson but as long as they learn from it we will be fine.”
