Pools Youth Team fell to their second successive defeat of the new Youth Alliance League season against Hull City on Saturday but Coach John Hewitson insisted he was happy with the performance.
The youngsters went down 3-1 at Lincoln City on the opening day last weekend and Hewitson had demanded they produce a much-improved display when they hosted Hull at Chester-le-Street.
And he got his wish as his players attacked the visitors with determination and created several good opportunities - only to be undone by individual mistakes just before and just after half time.
Ben Wignall had a great chance to put Pools in front in the first half when he went one on one with the keeper after great work by Dan Jones, but the striker fired his shot too high.
City increased the pace towards the break and when Pools failed to clear their lines effectively the ball fell kindly for the striker who struck home the opening goal.
The second half began promisingly enough with Pools getting on the front foot again, but they were caught on the counter-attack and Hull were able to double their lead.
Pools finished the game the stronger as they looked for route back in to it but Hull defended doggedly and secured the 2-0 win.
"It's always disappointing to lose but we showed real character in the game," Hewitson told us.
"We knew we needed better than they showed against Lincoln and the lads certainly gave us that - they fought until the very end and had the right attitude.
"I know that if we perform like that week in and week out then we'll do ok this season but Hull are a good side who made us pay for our mistakes."
