The 18-year-old burst on to the scene at Reserve Team level last term when his two goals against Middlesbrough brought him to the attention of the Pools hierarchy.
He went on to make his First Team debut towards the end of last season when he came on as a late substitute in the game against Chesterfield at Victoria Park in April 2012.
Rutherford has also been on the fringes of the First Team during the current campaign and made his second senior appearance when he was introduced from the bench at MK Dons in December.
The confident teenager is most comfortable with the ball at his feet and has the ability to drive the team forward from the middle of the park.
Having signed a short-term deal in the summer, his new contract gives him further time to impress boss John Hughes and he'll be hoping to progress further during 2013.
